Chapter 296
Found them!
As soon as the news broke, the rescue team burst into cheers.
The folks in the lab immediately started analyzing the depth of the trapped group.
“122 feet down!” One of the folks from the lab said.
Hearing this, the rescue team sprang into action.
The sudden good news energized everyone, and they immediately began measuring the thickness of the rock above and the length of the ventilation ducts.
Everything was moving along smoothly.
The wildlife rescue team and Henry finally breathed a sigh of reef.
Seeing this, one of the rescue workers suggested, “All of you, you haven’t slept in ages. Why don’t you go get some rest?”
Henry was about to refuse, but Ethan nodded and chimed in, “M. Carter, you’re not in your thirties anymore, you know. Pulling an all-nighter isn’t good for you at your age.
“If you get sick, Sierra will blame herself when she’s out. The rescue team knows what they’re doing. We’re just in the way here. Why not take their advice and get some rest? You’ll need your energy.”
Henry’s refusal died on his lips.
Without another word, he nodded and headed to the makeshift shelter to rest.
Once Ethan was sure Henry was resting, he stepped out of the makeshift shelter and called Thomas.
Ethan said, “Mr. Monroe, some unscrupulous media outlets have gotten wind of Sierra being trapped in the mine. Can you handle it?”
After hanging up, Ethan glanced at the top trending topics and let out a deep sigh.
Inside the mine, it was so dark that people couldn’t even see their own hands in front of their faces.
Sierra hugged Ada tightly, while Elliot held onto the little boy, whose mind was clearly starting to unravel. The whole group sprawled out on the jagged rock floor, each trying to find a spot that was at least bearable.
They’d been stuck down here for more than eighteen hours.
To save what little battery they had left, everyone except Sierra had switched off their phones, and the overhead spotlight only flickered on for a few minutes every now and then.
Even though Sierra’s phone showed the time, after being trapped in this pitch-black, sealed darkness for so long, nobody could really tell how much time had passed. Stuck in here, it was easy to lose their sense of time and even themselves.
Oxygen was running low, and with barely any room to move, the air was so thin it felt like every breath was a struggle. The mine wasn’t hot, but with almost no ventilation, everyone’s chest felt tight, and breathing was getting harder.
The adults managed to tough it out, only taking a few sips of water over the past eighteen hours and saving most of it for the two kids.
Anderson worked on the walkie-talkie under the weak and flickering light of the spotlight. Even with everything falling apart, he stuck to his duty and tried to comfort everyone, saying “Don’t worry, guys. I’ll fix this walkie-talkie, and the rescue team will definitely find us.”
Anderson seemed to have everything under control except ignoring how his voice was trembling, as if he were about to cry.
Elliot blinked in the darkness and edged closer to Sierra.
He licked his parched lips, already feeling calm inside.
“Anderson, you don’t need to be scared. Sophie is still down here and trust me. Leonard would dig through the earth itself to get her out. Let’s just try to relax,” Elliot said.
After that brief moment of panic, Elliot was back to his usual calm, as if nothing could shake him.
Honestly, Leonard beat him up all the time, but when it came to Sophie, he was totally whipped. If anything happened to her, Leonard would probably go off the deep end and jump off a bridge.
Of course, before Leonard did that, he’d have to find her body first.
Anderson had no clue how scatterbrained Elliot was until the guy suddenly started ranting, “Leonard has been a genius since forever. He got into college at fifteen, Cambridge at eighteen, and was running the company at twenty.
