Chapter 300

Sierra spent three days in the hospital, and Vivian took on the role of her caregiver.

Vivian looked after her with real care, but Sierra felt uncomfortable, even started dodging Vivian.

Vivian might have acted all easygoing, but she wasn’t dumb. There’s no way she missed Sierra suddenly getting all awkward.

Honestly, Vivian knew exactly what was going on.

That day, Vivian sent her youngest, the little third wheel, out on a fruit run, leaving just the two of them so she could finally open up to Sierra.

“Sierra, these past few days, I feel like you’ve been keeping your distance from me. Is there something you want to talk to me about?” Vivian asked gently.

Sierra paused for a moment, then lowered her head.

Vivian leaned in close, her voice soft and soothing, as if she were comforting a child. “Is it because of the accident? Are you feeling guilty?”

Sierra’s long lashes trembled.

Vivian got it. She’d guessed right.

Vivian said, “Sierra, if things had gone wrong in that mine, sure, would’ve been heartbroken. But I promise you, I would never put the blame on you.

“Sophie is a cop, so it’s her job to protect you. And Elliot… He’s your friend, and he chose that himself. As for my own son, I know him well.

“He is quick with words and would’ve insisted on going down there with you, no matter what.

“Honestly, I’ve always seen you as my own girl. Whether it’s Sophie, Leonard, or Elliot, you all mean the same to me.”

Sierra looked up, her eyes fixed on Vivian, a little stunned.

Vivian couldn’t help but laugh, “Why are you looking at me like that? Did I move you that much?”

Sierra mumbled, “Hmm.

“You’re the best person I’ve ever met,” she said honestly.

Vivian’s heart felt sweet and warm at those words.

Vivian could see that Sierra was the kind of girl who kept everything bottled up inside, never letting her true feelings show. To everyone else, she always seemed so put-together, like she could handle anything life threw at her.

But the more people praised Sierra, the more it tugged at Vivian’s heart.

She thought, ‘Sierra is only twenty-three, barely out of college, still at that age when most people her age were leaning on their parents for help.

‘But Sierra has nothing. Her adoptive parents had treated her horribly, and her real parents wanted nothing to do with her. At the time when she needed love and support the most, she was left all alone.’

Vivian’s heart ached for her.

Vivian couldn’t resist. She gave Sierra’s head a gentle rub. “From now on, don’t call me ‘Aunt Vivian’ anymore. Just call me

‘Mom.

Sierra was stunned for a moment; her lips quivered.

Vivian continued, “I’ve wanted to have you as my daughter for a long time. Our family always cherishes having a girl.”

Vivian liked Sophie, too. When her eldest son got married, she was so happy about finally having a daughter-in-law that she could barely sleep at night.

But after spending more time together, Vivian realized that Sophie wasn’t quite the soft and sweet daughter that she’d pictured in her mind.

Especially when they were out shopping, and Vivian watched Sophie knock out a 6-foot-tall, 220-pound guy with a thick gold chain. Just three punches and the guy was down. After that, Vivian couldn’t help but worry she might be next.

So whenever Sophie and her eldest son got into an argument, Vivian would make herself scarce.

Her son could take a hit, but she definitely couldn’t.

She had two sons, but only one mom. So, she had to make sure to take care of herself.

But after all these years, Vivian still longed for a sweet, gentle daughter of her own.

Now that she finally had the chance, Vivian didn’t hold back. “We’re all going to be family anyway, so whether you call me ‘Aunt Vivian’ or ‘Mom’, it’s all the same to me.”

Sierra just stared at her, completely confused.

She didn’t really get what Vivian was saying, but inside, her heart raced with nerves.

She opened her mouth, and under Vivian’s encouraging gaze, finally managed to whisper, “Mom.”

“Yeah! My precious girl!” Vivian cried out.

Vivian pulled Sierra into a hug, her face glowing with excitement, her eyes shining with happiness.

The door creaked open.

Elliot walked in, lugging a huge bag of fruit. The moment he stepped inside, he heard Sierra call his mom “Mom.”

Elliot stood frozen in the doorway, looking completely lost.

He thought, ‘What the hell is going on?

‘Did Mom just do the hard work for me and get Sierra to say yes?

‘Oh my god!’

Elliot’s eyes went wide, rubbing his hands together. Happiness hit him out of nowhere, and he was honestly at a loss for what to do.

“Elliot, you’re back!” Vivian called out, waving him over. “Come here!”
