Chapter 295
Ever since contact was lost with the people below, the rescue team above had been working under intense pressure.
After inspection, experts found that Tunnel One and Tunnel Two were non-compliant. The drilling depth exceeded the national standard by 35%, a discrepancy too great for thermal imaging to detect. This made the rescue far more difficult.
Up above, the rescue team was scrambling frantically, directionless yet forced to stay calm. They couldn’t afford to panic. The lives below depended on their clear heads.
Trapped below were a police officer, three civilian heroes, and two young children. Failing to save them would be such a

The rescue team leader spoke up right away, “No matter what happens, our rescue won’t stop until we find them.”
The police chief said, “I’m going to notify the authorities right now. We’re short-handed here, but there’s backup in the neighboring cities. With all these people, I refuse to believe we won’t find them.”
Hearing the two speak, Ethan didn’t feel any relief. Instead, it felt like a heavy stone was pressing down on his chest, squeezing tighter with every word,
Ethan asked, “Sierra’s file is classified. If she’s in danger, the government will prioritize her extraction. Right now, pinpointing their exact location is key. Is there any tech besides thermal imaging that can give us a clear fix?”
The rescue team leader paused, taken aback. He thought for a moment, then his eyes lit up. “Actually, yes. I recently heard about a research group at Northbel University developing a device to see through solids. No idea if it’s operational yet, though.”
“I’ll get in touch!” Ethan blurted out without a second thought.
The rescue team leader was caught off guard and instinctively reached out to stop Ethan. But the police chief quickly cut him off.
The rescue team leader said, “Maybe we should go through official channels. It might be tough for him to make contact.”
The police chief replied, “Everyone in the wildlife rescue team graduated from Northbel University, and Sierra was one of their top students. Captain Woods will reach them faster.”
Ethan didn’t hesitate. He dialed Henry right away. When Henry Heard about the mine collapse and that Sierra was trapped inside, he almost blacked out on the spot.
“Don’t pass out, please, Mr. Carter. Sierra’s counting on you! At least wait until you’ve talked to the lab,” Ethan said.
“You’ve got some nerve joking at a time like this. There’s no way m fainting now. Stay on the line. I’m at Northbel University, heading straight to the lab to get that device,” Henry replied.
In the Northbel University classroom, the freshman vet students just stared as the famous Henry Carter bolted off the stage. Henry called another teacher to take over his class and dashed straight to the lab.
After a quick briefing, the lab director said, “In theory, our detector can scan down to about 160 feet. It’s still experimental, largely untested. But with lives at stake, I’ll have my team get it to the site and run a scan.”
Henry couldn’t be bothered with the details right now. If there was even the slightest chance, he had to go for it.
When the lab team showed up with the device three hours later, Henry was among them. The long trip had taken its toll. Ethan could see that Henry was pale, his hair mussed, and clearly drained.
“Mr. Carter.” Ethan called out.
Henry waved him off. “I’m fine. How’s Sierra? Let me talk to her now!”
Ethan’s voice shook a little as he finally said, “Sierra’s walkie-talkie might be busted. We haven’t been able to reach her, but from what we know, there are no major injuries. They’re all fine
Mine One and Mine Two were each about as big as a football field, so checking every spot was slow and exhausting.
Everyone kept their eyes glued to the screen all day and all night but even when the scorching sun rose the next day, they still came up empty-handed. The hope that had sparked in Ethan and the others was slowly being snuffed out.
After a sleepless night, stubble had sprouted on everyone’s faces and their eyes rimmed with red. Ethan, who hardly ever smoked, had been chain-smoking all night, never letting his cigarette go out.
Timothy buried his face in his hands and rubbed at his aching, dry eyes. His voice was thick with despair. “Ethan, is this device useless? Are we ever going to find Sierra and the others?”
“Don’t say that!” Ethan snapped, but inside, he felt just as hopeless as Timothy.
Timothy pressed his lips together and stayed silent.
All night long, the screen was a sea of green. Just rocks everywhere. The only flashes of red were probably just rats darting through the tunnels. Their hope was ground down bit by bit, un all that was left was despair.
Everyone knew deep down that the odds of finding them were next to nothing, but nobody dared to say it out loud.
Timothy felt so lost that he couldn’t find the words. He just kept his eyes glued to the computer screen, his eyes stinging after a full day and night without rest.
Just then, Timothy saw six blazing red heat signatures suddenly appear on the computer screen. He rubbed his eyes. ‘Am I seeing things? Maybe I’m just too exhausted.
Timothy nudged Ethan, who was massaging his temples, and said. “Ethan, am I losing it, or is the whole screen just red now?
Ethan froze, stunned, and slowly lifted his head.
