“What’s wrong?” Sierra asked.

Seeing Sierra trying to sit up, Elliot was quick to respond and handed her the box.

It was a camera as wide as two fingers, and it even had a screen about the size of a watch face.

Sierra found the red power button.

With a beep, the camera turned on.

“Sierra!” Henry said.

After seven long days, everyone topside finally managed to reach Sierra again. They were practically bursting with excitement.

More than a dozen faces popped up on the tiny screen all at once.

Henry was right in the middle of the crowd. His stubble was all gray and white, and his eyes rimmed with red.

Seeing the gray at Henry’s temples, Sierra’s eyes burned with tears. “Mr. Carter, I’m so sorry.”

“Why are you apologizing to me?” Henry said, his voice trembling with relief. Seeing Sierra alive finally took the weight off his chest after seven days of worry.

Noticing Sierra didn’t look well, he quickly said, “Those fat rats have glucose tied to them.”

As soon as Sophie heard this, she called the rest of the rats over. Sure enough, they found dozens of glucose packs attached to them.

Sophie opened the glucose packs and shared them with everyone.

Glucose would help restore their strength, but without water, it was so sweet it was almost impossible to choke down.

For people who hadn’t eaten in ages, that glucose was a real lifesaver.

And sure enough, after everyone had some, they instantly perked up.

Elliot spotted Leonard on the screen and blurted out, “Leonard, can you get those big rats to bring us some water? If we don’t drink soon, we’re toast.”

“Quit worrying,” Leonard replied. “The rescue team is right above you, and they’ll break through the ventilation shaft in about six hours. I sent the rats over to warn you about falling rocks. Is there anywhere nearby you guys can hide?”
