Begging for a Second Chance (Sienna Sloan and Jarred Sterling) novel Chapter 126

Inside the police station waiting room, Sienna and Luna had been waiting for nearly twenty minutes.

Sienna's wheelchair was parked by the sofa, her fingertips tapping rhythmically against the armrest.

When they first arrived, they had watched the suspect identify the other two potential targets.

Just as Sienna expected, neither of them were the mastermind.

Now, Celeste was the only one left, and she still hadn't arrived.

"Don't stress." Luna sat in the chair next to her, flipping through a magazine. "Nolan just told us the hospital situation was a bit complicated, so we'll have to wait a little longer."

Sienna didn't reply, but her lips curled up slightly.

Luna noticed the expression and leaned over. "Hey, look at that face. You're feeling pretty confident, huh?"

"I was just wondering if she'll actually show up today."

"Why wouldn't she? It's a police summons. She has to."

Sienna gave a soft laugh.

Luna leaned closer, dropping her voice. "But honestly, I bet she's too guilty to show her face. She knows exactly what she did."

The two shared a smile. Luna was about to add something else when a flurry of footsteps echoed from the corridor.

The door to the waiting room was pushed open.

Mrs. Sterling was wheeled in first, with Helena trailing right behind.

Finally, a maid wheeled in Celeste, who looked pale, red-eyed, and thoroughly frail.

Their eyes swept the room and locked onto Sienna.

Helena glared openly, her eyes brimming with unfiltered disgust and loathing.

Mrs. Sterling didn't look any friendlier; even the wrinkles on her face seemed to broadcast her sheer impatience.

Sienna gave them one look, withdrew her gaze, and said to Luna, "Go get the police."

Luna nodded, stood up, and walked out.

Celeste was pushed to the opposite side of the waiting room. The two camps sat about fifteen feet apart, drawing a clear line in the sand.

Soon, a middle-aged officer walked in and pushed Celeste into an adjoining room.

Sienna grabbed her armrests. "What's wrong?"

The young officer took a breath, trying to steady himself. "The suspect... the hitman suffered a sudden heart attack half an hour ago. He was pronounced dead at the scene."

The words struck Sienna like a bolt of lightning.

"What?"

"A massive heart attack," the young officer repeated. "He just collapsed. The coroner pronounced it five minutes ago. Resuscitation failed."

Sienna gripped the armrests so hard her knuckles turned white.

How could this happen?

How could it happen so suddenly?

"Did he identify the suspect?" Sienna's voice trembled.

The officer silently shook his head.

Luna's face drained of color as she leaned in close. "That's impossible, Sienna. The file I gave you showed absolutely zero history of heart disease. That was an internal police file. They wouldn't make a mistake like that."
