Begging for a Second Chance (Sienna Sloan and Jarred Sterling) novel Chapter 170

Dr. Shaw frantically tried to explain himself, "Mr. Sterling, I... I just had a momentary lapse in judgment! It was the old lady, she—"

"A momentary lapse in judgment?" Jarred scoffed bitterly. "Because of your little 'lapse in judgment,' Arthur Sterling nearly lost his life!

"Do you have any idea what Arthur Sterling's name represents in the Capital? Do you know what his net worth is?

"If a single hair on his head had been harmed, ten of your lives wouldn't have been enough to pay for it!"

Dr. Shaw's shoulders violently convulsed as cold sweat poured down his cheeks.

Jarred's expression was utterly apathetic. He looked up at Declan. "Send him where he belongs. Abuse of power and attempted murder for financial gain. That should be enough for him to reflect on his choices behind bars for the rest of his life."

"No! Mr. Sterling, I was wrong! Madam, please, say something!"

Dr. Shaw desperately tried to crawl over to Eleanor's feet, but the bodyguards immediately restrained him.

"Mr. Sterling, I was just following orders! I beg you, spare me just this once!"

Helena quickly chimed in, pleading, "Jarred, does he really need to go to prison? Isn't that taking things too far?

"What do you mean 'becoming a vegetable' or 'never waking up'? Sienna completely made that up! Don't listen to her lies!"

Jarred let out a freezing laugh. "Lies? Then tell me the truth. What exactly was that formula supposed to do?"

"It..." Helena panicked, her words dying in her throat as she quickly shut her mouth.

"What could it possibly do?" Eleanor finally spoke up, though she looked incredibly unwell.

"We just saw how long your grandfather has been bedridden, and we wanted him to recover faster so he could get out of bed and walk.

"The formula we had Dr. Shaw alter was strictly meant to strengthen his body. I have no idea why Sienna would spew such vicious nonsense. We absolutely didn't do anything malicious.

"Or do you honestly believe Sienna? Do you actually think we'd try to murder your own grandfather?"

"I don't give a damn how you view my marriage. I only respect Grandpa's decision. But if you two are absolutely dead set on driving her out of the Sterling family, I am fully capable of walking out of this family myself."

That single sentence violently choked Eleanor into silence. Her chest heaved dramatically as she hacked out a violent cough, her face turning even paler.

Celeste hurried to rub her back, shooting Jarred a reproachful glare. "Jarred, how could you speak to Grandma like that? She's only doing this for your own good."

Jarred stared at the frail old woman. A brief flash of complex emotion crossed his eyes before the glacial cold instantly returned.

"If your health is failing, focus on resting. Stop obsessing over how to terrorize the younger generation."

With that, he didn't spare another glance to check their reactions. He simply waved a hand at Declan.

The two men in black suits instantly moved forward. They hoisted up the wailing traditional doctor and dragged him straight out the door.

The desperate screams faded into the distance, leaving only Eleanor's heavy, ragged panting echoing through the living room.
