Sienna remained trapped in a deep sleep.
Her brow was tightly furrowed, and her body occasionally twitched, clearly plagued by nightmares.
Maloney sat quietly by her bed. The attending physician finished his examination and looked up, preparing to discuss her condition with him.
Just then, the door pushed open. Jarred walked in, his chest heavily bandaged.
He had taken the shears for Celeste.
During the attack, Sienna had been physically drained, her limbs lacking any real force, so the blade hadn't struck anything vital.
Even so, the puncture wound to his chest had caused significant blood loss, leaving him severely weakened.
"Perfect timing. You handle this with the doctor."
Maloney tactfully stood up, excused himself, and stepped out of the room.
Jarred's gaze fell on Sienna's pale, exhausted face. The sight of her made his chest ache, stealing his breath.
"How is she?" he asked the doctor.
"Ms. Sloan's condition is not very optimistic."
The doctor sighed. "She is suffering from profound psychological distress. Our initial assessment points to long-term emotional suppression.
What happened today wasn't an isolated incident; it was a warning sign. Her mental endurance has reached its absolute limit.
If this continues, the next person she hurts might not be someone else. It might be herself."
Jarred said nothing, his hands slowly curling into fists at his sides.
The doctor continued. "I'm told Ms. Sloan is usually very composed and rational.
People with that type of personality rarely show their negative emotions. They're used to shouldering everything on their own.
As long as they can handle it, they appear fine. But once they break, the rebound is far more violent than an average person's."
He looked at Jarred. "Mr. Sterling, is there a deep-seated trauma she hasn't resolved? Or perhaps... has she been trapped in an environment that causes her severe distress for a long time?"
Jarred did not answer.
How could he not know what her trauma was?
From the very beginning, all she wanted was to divorce him.
The doctor let out a heavy sigh. "Since your wife has been medicated for a while, you must know that no drug can magically cure emotional trauma.
Unless the root cause is resolved, her condition will only deteriorate."
When Sienna finally opened her eyes, it was already afternoon.
She pushed her frail body up and immediately saw the man sitting beside her. She lunged at him, grabbing the front of his shirt.
"Where is Owen? Give me back his legal guardianship!"
Her eyes were entirely devoid of warmth, filled only with aggressive hostility and defensiveness.
Jarred let out a mocking scoff, swatting her hands away with contempt. "Being tied to a lunatic like you really is exhausting. It seems this marriage really is over."
Sienna froze.
She watched as he reached over, picked up the divorce agreement he had already prepared, and casually tossed it onto her lap.
"Right now, my grandfather is the only one standing in the way. If you can convince him to nod, I will return Owen's guardianship to you instantly."
Sienna snatched the paperwork and marched straight toward the door without a single word.
The moment she pulled it open, Helena's biting voice drifted down the hall.
"Dad, stop dragging this out for them! I'll be absolutely clear. Under no circumstances will I accept a psychotic daughter-in-law!
Today she stabbed my son with shears. Tomorrow, is she going to take a butcher knife to me? This divorce must happen!"
