Betrayed by Blood: My Second Life as a Queen novel Chapter 168

She needed time to process her feelings and didn't have the energy to play caretaker for anyone else.

Plus, she trusted Lucian to handle it.

It was just paying a medical bill. What could possibly go wrong? It wasn't like Lucian was going to march in there and order the doctors to kill the guy.

With that in mind, she nodded. "Thank you. Just bring me the receipt, and I'll wire you the cash."

The smile on Lucian's lips faded slightly. "You don't need to treat me like a stranger."

Willow narrowed her eyes. "No way. I always pay my debts."

Lucian didn't argue. Instead, he pulled out a first-aid kit from the cabin, scooping up a dollop of soothing ointment with his long fingers before gently massaging it into the raw skin on her wrists.

The cool gel instantly provided relief, numbing the dull throb of the friction burns.

Willow closed her eyes, savoring the comfort. Once both wrists were bandaged, she suddenly felt a burning heat wrap around her ankle.

She looked down to find Lucian's large, sculpted hand firmly gripping her leg.

His massive palm completely enveloped her slender ankle, creating an undeniably seductive contrast.

His skin was burning hot, sending a jolt through her that made her instinctively try to pull away.

But he simply tightened his hold.

"Don't move," he murmured, keeping his gaze lowered to hide the intense possessiveness swirling in his eyes. "We need to treat this, or you're going to wake up covered in bruises tomorrow."

Unable to escape, she sat perfectly still, watching as he carefully rubbed the white ointment into her skin.

The sharp clash between the icy medicinal gel and the searing heat of his fingertips sent her heartbeat into overdrive.

Her breath hitched. Staring at his hands, she couldn't stop the nagging thought: If he was already engaged, why was he constantly going out of his way to mess with her head?

Was this just a fun game to him?

The worst part was her own pathetic weakness. Every time he played the hero, she fell a little bit harder.

She opened her mouth, ready to demand answers about his fiancée.

But she couldn't force the words out.
