Betrayed by Blood: My Second Life as a Queen novel Chapter 169

What was he doing here?

Sterling's innocent facade melted away, replaced by a bitter, cynical sneer.

He scoffed, his voice dripping with sarcasm. "Like a dog smelling meat. You got here fast."

Lucian didn't even blink. "Talking about yourself? Faking sickness just for a shred of pity... Is that the same pathetic trick your mother used to seduce married men? No wonder the old man has such a soft spot for you."

Sterling's eyes flared with rage. His status as an illegitimate child had always been his deepest insecurity.

His mother had knowingly played the role of the mistress. Before she hooked up with Dominic Jagger, she had just been a maid on the estate.

Unwilling to spend the rest of her life serving others, she used the opportunity of Lucian's mother's pregnancy to sleep her way into Dominic's bed, hiding as his secret lover for a decade.

To prevent getting caught, she even dragged the family chauffeur into her scheme, convincing everyone that he was the father of her baby.

Lucian's mother fell for it entirely.

She had even pampered the scheming maid throughout the entire pregnancy.

Little did she know she was taking care of her husband's mistress.

When the truth finally came to light, she unleashed hell, obliterating the maid's reputation completely.

That was why, despite how much Dominic favored Sterling now, he would never train him as a true heir. Sterling would always be the dirty secret kept in the shadows.

Having Lucian throw all that history in his face felt exactly like a physical slap.

Sterling let out a dark laugh. "Don't worry. It's not just your dad who spoils me, your wife is starting to do it too. You couldn't beat me for a father's love, and you won't beat me for hers."

Raising an arrogant eyebrow, he pushed further. "You see, even when she's right next to you, all I have to do is make one phone call, and she comes running. If you weren't constantly hovering, she'd be the one wiping my brow right now—"
