She thought of Elias. When he had a change of heart, he hadn't given her a second to process it, nor had he offered a single explanation from start to finish.
Instead, he had irrationally piled all the blame onto her shoulders.
Leaving her unable to defend herself and plunging her into self-doubt.
But Lucian wasn't like that.
She could actively feel his respect.
The stark contrast made Willow's guarded heart suddenly soften.
The frost in her eyes melted away slightly. She replied in a soft voice, "Then let's talk about this after you've handled it. But until then, I expect you to keep your distance and not overstep."
This was the safety line Willow drew for herself. Even if Lucian completely botched his so-called engagement fallout, she could cut her losses and walk away unscathed.
Hearing this, Lucian felt no disappointment. Instead, a heavy sigh of relief left his lungs.
Not wanting the atmosphere between them to become too stiff, he dropped the subject and asked, "Where are you heading? I can give you a ride."
Willow glanced at him. "Weren't you planning to invest in the pharmaceutical industry? Do you want me to accompany you for a site visit?"
While Lucian was incredibly tempted and desperately wanted to spend more time with her, the past two days had been relentlessly chaotic. He didn't want to exhaust her.
So he said, "There's no rush. I'm still in the scouting phase. We can handle that after your lawsuit wraps up."
That way, he'd have the perfect excuse to see her a few more times.
Willow had no objections; she really did need a break. "Then I'll have to trouble you to drive me home."
An hour later, Willow arrived home.
Lucian tactfully stayed outside. Like a perfect gentleman, he said, "Get a good rest. Call me if you need anything. I'm staying right nearby."
Willow nodded and watched him walk away, turning his head to look back at her after every few steps.
At that moment, she actually felt the urge to laugh.
She had planned on taking a nap, but the second she closed her eyes, her phone started blaring like a siren.
