Lucian completely ignored the snide remark.
Why would he bother arguing with a guy who hadn't even managed to hold her hand?
He and Willow had already shared a kiss.
Even if it was an accident...
It was still infinitely better than nothing!
Snapping back to reality, Willow awkwardly pulled her hand free.
The sudden emptiness in his palm left Lucian silent. He didn't speak for the rest of the ride.
Thankfully, the suffocating tension didn't last long before they pulled up to their destination.
Lucian and York stepped out simultaneously, both offering her a gentlemanly hand.
Willow ignored them both. She slid out of the car on her own and marched straight toward the research center.
Neither seemed overly offended. They exchanged a look before York let out a low chuckle, striding after her. Keeping his voice just loud enough for Lucian to hear, he murmured, "You see that, Lucian? She didn't exactly choose you. Looks like you aren't irreplaceable after all."
It was a simple sentence, but it twisted like a jagged blade straight into Lucian's chest.
His eyes darkened, but he couldn't find a single word to fight back.
Until...
Willow looked back.
She marched right back over and grabbed Lucian by his left wrist. "Why did you stop?"
Feeling the warmth of her grip, the storm clouds in Lucian's mind instantly cleared.
He stared at her profile, the sunlight casting a golden, ethereal glow across her stunning features.
His Adam's apple bobbed as he swallowed hard.
The smile on York's face faded slightly. Was Willow actually falling for Lucian?
Willow had absolutely no idea what kind of mental gymnastics the two of them were doing. The contact at Lycian Global still hadn't responded, and the private security detail she called as backup was still a good ten minutes away. She wasn't about to face Silas alone. The guy was a total psycho and brought muscle. What if he hurt her?
