"Exactly. You were so little back then, so how did you know to show up at our door demanding we repay you?" Willow had always found the whole situation baffling. Tessa was smart for her age, but without someone pulling the strings behind the scenes, a child couldn't possibly pull off something like that.
Furthermore, the schemes she used to target Willow later on hardly seemed like the workings of a child's mind.
However, up until her past life ended, Tessa never seemed to have an accomplice. Even if Willow had her suspicions, she couldn't find any solid proof of foul play.
Tessa's body remained rigid as she forced out a reply through gritted teeth. "Because I was an orphan with no food to eat! I had no choice but to beg for a meal!"
Willow chuckled. "Well, isn't that a coincidence? The moment you walked through our door, you explicitly stated that your father died to save me. Anyone else would think you had it all planned out."
Tessa clenched her fists so hard her fresh manicure dug into her palms, sending sharp spikes of pain through her skin.
She couldn't utter a single word. She had no idea how to respond.
After all, it really was far too suspicious.
Willow didn't even need her to respond. She just continued smoothly, "As for me forcing you to grovel and humiliate yourself? I did it. What are you going to do about it?"
Willow's arrogance drove Tessa to the brink of madness. She secretly gritted her teeth, swallowing her fury, and turned to look at Julian.
Thanks to growing up in the Shaw household, Tessa had developed a keen instinct for reading people from a very young age. She had clearly caught Julian's fleeting moment of hesitation and knew that right now, playing the victim with him was her best bet.
She put on a weak, fragile front, weeping pitifully. In the past, it would have been an incredibly endearing and sympathetic sight.
