The guard had been stationed there by the King himself. Hearing her threat, his expression didn't so much as twitch as he replied with robotic professionalism, "My apologies, but please turn back. Her Highness is currently grounded. No unauthorized personnel are allowed inside."
Grounded?
Tessa's face went completely blank for a second. Wasn't Daphne supposed to be the most favored princess in all of The Sovereign Isles? How could she be grounded? What exactly had happened?
A creeping sense of unease washed over Tessa. She quickly ducked her head and dialed Daphne's number.
The call went unanswered, but ten minutes later, a maid opened the heavy doors. "Please come in, Miss Thorne."
Tessa forcefully composed herself and walked in, immediately spotting Daphne in the courtyard.
At that moment, the princess looked haggard. The lingering fire of anger still burned in her eyes, making it obvious that she had just thrown a massive tantrum.
Seeing Tessa, she didn't even bother to speak, simply giving a dismissive lift of her chin.
Tessa carefully took a seat across from her and asked instinctively, "Your Highness, what on earth is going on?"
Daphne's expression turned frigid. "I just had a disagreement with my father. It has nothing to do with you. Don't ask questions about things that don't concern you."
Tessa's face fell, but internally, she let out a quiet sigh of relief.
Thank goodness it wasn't what she had feared. Based on the way Mrs. Halloway had treated Willow, Tessa actually thought all of this was Willow's doing!
Luckily, it wasn't. There was no way Willow had that kind of power anyway!
Tessa's eyes flickered, and she plastered on a fawning smile. "Your Highness, I only want to help solve your problems. I assumed Willow was the one who upset you."
At the mere mention of Willow's name, Daphne went rigid. A volatile mix of fear and hatred flashed through her eyes, though she quickly masked it.
She had been throwing her weight around her entire life, and this was the first time she had ever suffered such a catastrophic defeat!
Daphne couldn't just swallow this humiliation!
