Willow froze for a second, looking down at the green bills. Forty dollars.
She was baffled. Why was he giving her cash?
Before she could ask, Lucian's voice drifted over, sounding unbearably hoarse and drained. "I don't know how to do anything. Nobody wanted to hire me. I found a job handing out flyers... this is what I made today."
Willow was stunned into silence, staring at him in sheer disbelief as his voice dropped even softer.
"I'm sorry. I came back late and made you upset. I just wanted... to help carry the burden."
He looked incredibly vulnerable, and paired with that devastatingly handsome face, Willow's guilt skyrocketed instantly.
She was the worst!
Lucian was the heir to a billionaire empire. He probably didn't even know what a flyer was before today. Yet, in his amnesiac state, he had spent the entire day on the streets just to make a few bucks for her.
He must be dead on his feet, and the moment he walked through the door, she had immediately interrogated him. He had to feel awful.
At this point, Willow fully bought into his amnesia act again. If he wasn't really suffering from memory loss, why would he spend his day passing out flyers?
It wasn't like he purposely kept forty bucks in his pocket just to manipulate her right now.
That would be incredibly twisted!
Her icy demeanor melted completely. Instead of taking the cash, she gently pushed his hand back toward his pocket. "I don't need your help with money. You keep this for yourself."
She couldn't take a poor man's hard-earned cash. Even though his poverty was temporary and fake, taking his money felt like crossing a line. What if he started making unreasonable demands later?
Lucian didn't seem surprised. Instead, he reached out and gave her sleeve a gentle, tentative tug, playing the perfect wounded puppy. "Willow, since I've been so good, can you add me back on social media? I wanted to text you, but I couldn't find your profile anywhere."
Her lashes fluttered, a fresh wave of guilt crashing over her.
So that was it. He had assumed he'd done something wrong, that she was mad at him and deleted his contact info as punishment. No wonder he had been walking on eggshells around her for days...
