Betrayed by Blood: My Second Life as a Queen novel Chapter 49

Willow stared at the glowing text on her screen, a dark, mocking irony twisting in her chest.

She used to work at the Landon Medical Center. Dr. Alistair Sterling, the department head, had recognized her brilliance immediately, furious that her talent was being wasted on grunt work. She had submitted countless promotion requests to the hospital board, but every single one was denied.

The Landon family executives had decided that since she was destined to marry Elias anyway, her only future was being a trophy wife and a mother. Why bother giving her a career?

Worse, denying her a promotion didn't stop them from dumping endless workloads on her. They just wanted free labor.

So, she had remained a lowly intern.

She handled patient care, led pharmaceutical R&D, and did the work of ten people—all for a pathetic three hundred dollars a month.

And half the time, they forgot to pay her at all.

Looking back at how miserably she had lived, Willow couldn't help but laugh at the sheer absurdity of it all.

As for Dr. Sterling's glowing recommendation, she genuinely hadn't expected it.

She sent a quick emoji to Tabitha, locked her phone, and headed down to the subway station.

She barely made it through the turnstiles before her phone started vibrating relentlessly. She glanced at the screen. It was Julian Shaw.

A sarcastic sneer curled her lips, and she let it ring.

When they wanted her gone, they chased her out like a dog. Now that they needed her, they expected her to come running back the second they snapped their fingers? Did they think she had absolutely no self-respect?

Annoyed, she flipped her phone to silent.

Honestly, she was conflicted about how to handle Asher. The initial desire to repay her life debt was rapidly being eroded by the family's endless, suffocating favoritism.

She would save him. But only once.
