Chapter 7
“You changed your name? New family?”
He couldn’t believe it. Flipped the ID over and over. Still in denial.
“You’re messing with me. Trying to get back at me.”
I snatched it back. Tucked it carefully into my pocket. Gave a cold laugh.
“What? You get to have a sister. I can’t?”
His brow furrowed. “So that’s what this is about? You’re still pissed, so you went and found some
random woman to call family?”
“I called you like a hundred times these past six months. You never once picked up. You never even read my apologies. Your grudge is really that deep? Okay, fine, you did three years. It’s not like you actually lost anything. I had your whole future mapped out. I…”
“Enough.”
I cut him off. Cold.
I’d barely managed to push those three years out of my mind. I didn’t want to hear another word about it.

me.”
“I’m not your sister anymore. Stop looking for me. I won’t starve. And I don’t want the path you paved for
I grabbed Aria’s arm. Started to walk.
Fabio lunged forward. Grabbed my wrist.
“Getting back at me like this, have you thought about Dad at all? Changing your name, just because you met some woman. Is this how you honor him?”
My face went dark.
“I’ve got nothing to be ashamed of. Not to you. Not to Dad. But ask yourself this, when Dad was dying. he made you promise to take care of me. How’d that work out? You went and found yourself a new sister. And because of her, you threw me in prison.”
He went pale.

“I took Nerina in because she was just as messed up as we were. I sent you away because she played me. Emilia, I’m your brother. Your own flesh and blood. You really think I’d ever hurt you on purpose? At the

time, I just wanted to teach you a lesson.”
A cold wave washed over my heart. I laughed. Bitter. Sarcastic.
“You want a medal or something?”
He saw the disgust in my eyes. Flinched. Finally stopped making excuses. Looked sadly at Aria.
“Then who is she? How do you two even know each other?”
“Aria is my sister now. We met in prison.”
“What? Prison?”
His voice shot up. Face darkened. “Prison’s full of scumbags. How could you make someone like that your sister? Have you two been living together this whole time?”
I just looked at him, completely calm. Let a small smile tug at my lips.
“I was in prison too. So what does that make me? A scumbag?”
Panic flashed across his face. “That’s not what I meant…”
“Stop. I don’t want to hear it.”
I turned and walked away. Didn’t want to say another word to him.
Fabio didn’t follow. But he started calling from different numbers. I answered once. After that, if I didn’t recognize the number, I didn’t pick up.
A month later, I don’t know how, he got Aria’s number. Insisted on meeting me. Said he had something to
tell me.
I didn’t want to go. Aria convinced me.
“If you don’t see him, he’ll just keep finding ways to track you down. Better to meet once. Make things
clear.”
So I agreed. Met him at a café. When I got there, Nerina was with him.
Seeing my face, Fabio explained, “Emilia. I brought her here to apologize.”
