“Let’s check those cells, shall we?” Hacker said with a smirk, and soon the insides of the cells started to
pop up.
“I put these hidden cameras in the cells a few months ago, just before our first prisoner had arrived. It was a gut feeling; I had told Oddball I was scanning for bugs after finding a couple in the bar area. He was all for it, and he was a little jumpy, edgy for a few days, and I wonder now if he was concerned that your father had sent more spies into the club without his knowledge. That he wondered if he was being checked up on, or a shipment had gone wrong. Something had Oddball acting stranger than he normally would, which we all know can be odd, hence his name.” Hacker was not apologetic about having put the cameras in there; they had to be small so as not to be noticed. “There, that one.” We were looking at an empty cell.
“Can they be hacked?” Cora asked, the thought that had just popped into my head.
“No, this sends a different short-range frequency that goes to my personal computer back home. I am on my computer to see it, and my computer is safe. I changed the password nearly every day; I’ve been a little overprotective lately. Glad I have been.”
“Who was in here?” I asked, but didn’t really need to ask, but did anyway.
“Bluey, she was supposed to be in this one, and she is not in any of the others, and it looks like some of the men are gone too, but unless I go over the footage, I won’t know if they are dead or released.” None of us was surprised; the cells didn’t look like anyone had cleaned them, and there were only two men still in the cells, far less than what should be there.
“Don’t bother, leave it, and act like you have no idea/Bluey was gone.” I looked at Cora, who was nodding in agreement. We were so very worried that Hacker was heading back into known danger.
Before we knew it, it was lunchtime.
We agreed we would stop and eat, then see Hacker away, before getting back to work. There wasn’t much more we could do on our end; it was not up to Hacker back at his office and my team to put things together. I have called my headman, who went on the shooter’s trip; I want to ask more questions. Need to hear it again: what they felt, their gut instincts, did the men who were captured say anything? One of my men can lip-read, and if something were said, he would have read it.
“Be careful, Hacker; don’t take risks. If you feel you are in danger, get your hide back here. If you feel you can’t get away, give us a signal, and I will have a chopper in the air, and on the way over there, with men to rescue you.” I urged Hacker, I can’t push the need to be safe enough. I don’t trust Oddball, not now. There is too much evidence against him and Bluey.
We stood at the top of the driveway and watched Hacker leave; he was in the chopper for the first leg of his trip. Taking with him a part of me that was worried about him and wouldn’t be happy until we heard he was safe or came back to us.
Back in the office, we were busy with the paperwork, going through the piles of printouts.
Cora was entering information onto a spreadsheet as we found it.

What we thought was of importance.

The Shape of the spreadsheet kept changing as we kept charging our minds about what we were looking for. Cora said to put everything in and use filters to find what we want. Ruby was trying to help, keying in more slowly to keep it accurate. I appreciated that Ruby was willing to try.
A sheet of paper I was looking at had me freeze up and stare.
Grandpa and Dad are both in this together, and by the look of, along with my exes, my father too. The crooked lot of them – no wonder I had a hard time as a young man; I didn’t stand a chance against them till I grew and learned some rules, and gained a backbone. I was still too young to understand how much danger I was in. Now I am more sure Dad had a hand in Dianne’s death.
That trio of scumbags, I want them stripped of all their money, respect and dignity.
