Chapter 187
Cora (Dollar) POV
We were settled in the sitting room, and I received a text.
‘Arrived safely, no danger yet,‘ it was from Hacker.
“Hacker has arrived back,” I called out to the group.
“Good. Hope it’s safe,” Scrubs said. He had been glancing at his phone all afternoon, waiting to hear from Hacker. It took him four hours to ride home. That was after the short chopper ride; he insisted on riding in, leaving no chance anyone would see him arrive by chopper. That would just put him at higher risk, and Dad had agreed; even if he didn’t want to, it was more about what Hacker wanted for peace of mind.
“Let me start the night with a few small clips I had taken in our early days together. While we were still young, we were still at school, and life was less dramatic.” Dad put on the first clip, and I heard my mother’s laugh, and giggle, a sound I had never truly heard, as my mother seldom laughed, she was too far gone, drowned in her own sorrow and bitterness, she never needed to go down that road, my mother could have been free, it’s not like she didn’t have money, but she chose, to carry that sadness, that woe is me, mentality, and my uncle fed her with it. Aiding in keeping her sad.
I never understood that side of her, that side that had this haunted look.
I learned a lot from her. Don’t get me wrong: on her good days, she would spend time with me and teach me about her business, believing that a woman should never have to rely on a man. She only let my uncle around because she wanted company; I don’t think he ever bedded her. They had separate rooms, which I never understood till I found out he was not my father. It never occurred to me that they needed to share a room. I thought that was how married couples lived: in their own space and coming together when they wanted company. It was when he brought his real wife to my home that I saw that it was not the case.
Mother was so happy back then; the difference was amazing – the sparkle in her eyes when she looked at Dad, compared to the eyes I remembered. I knew at an early age not to ask questions about her childhood; she gave me what she thought I needed and nothing more. Looking at that clip, the laughter and love they had shared, it was a shame that it was snatched away from them.
“Demetri, you truly love Dianne. What happened to you? I know you didn’t fall out of love. You could see how much you both loved each other, it’s beautiful – that glow can’t be faked.” Ruby sounded awed by what she was watching, not an ounce of jealousy in her voice.

Dad explained, as he had to me when we started having father–daughter chats, how his father and grandfather orchestrated problems and put Dianne into danger, threatening to hurt her if he didn’t do as asked; more his grandfather, who pushed it, and his weak–spined father went along with everything. He had his eyes on the bigger prize: his father’s money and legacy, something Dad never cared for.
Then we moved to the letter.
The first few we had read before, but Dad read them out the way they should have sounded,
with his emotions laid bare for us to see. Scrubs cleared his throat a few times, as his
emotions rose to the surface. I wondered if he was thinking of Bluey at that moment; he really cared for her before the arguments started. Still does in a way, because you want to remember the good times, the person you loved, and not the person they became.
That’s the main difference between love, trust and respect: you can stop trusting and respecting someone, but the heart wants to keep the love part, and it takes longer for that part to diminish and stop hurting, and in the case of my mother, it never faded; it became jaded and bitter, each memory, taking her back to pain, and not the good, loving part.
‘My dearest love, Dianne. I am sending you this, my very last attempt to reach out to you. I have never stopped loving you; you are cemented deep inside my heart, and I refuse ever to let you go. I give you the space you yearn for, and respect your decision that it’s over for us. I won’t fight you for custody of our child. But if you need my help, please get in touch with me; I will be there right away. I will continue to put money into the accounts, one for our child and one for your living expenses. This is clean money I have earned, not the dirty money from my family. I have broken all ties with them and will never accept them back into my life, as you may know. I divorced that cheating woman, publicly, shaming her and her family. They have promised revenge. I am hoping that by staying away from you and our child, it will keep you safe. I love you now and always. Demetri.
“Dad, the in–law promised revenge? Could they have killed my mother and not your dad?” I suddenly had the cold tingle run down my back.
“I had forgotten they threatened me. We are digging into their past because his name was on one of the lists, but I will let my man know to add his name to your mother’s death.” Dad was busy texting someone as he spoke.
“That must have been one of the hardest letters you have written; your love for her is so deep. Did you not at least keep a man to watch over her?” Ruby asked, but I already knew the answer; I had asked the same thing.
“No, thought she was safer if I stayed away, had no contact, hoping they believed that with me not chasing after her now I was free, they would have forgotten about her. I am lucky the robber didn’t shoot Cora when he had the chance. If I put a man on her to watch over her, and

my dad found out, he would know I still had feelings for her, and would have acted. Little did I know that by the time she received this last letter, she was already…” Dad couldn’t continue and looked over at me, with the same love in his eyes that he had for my mother.
Ruby rubbed his back and leaned into him, giving him her support; they were good for each
other.
“That was the last letter; let’s continue,” Xavier said. He, too, sounded a little choked up as he emptied the entire box on the table and put the letters back in, so we could sieve through the
rest of the contents.
“Dianne kept some interesting keepsakes. This one was our very first movie together as a couple. This one was an art gallery opening; Dianne loved paintings and painting. Cora, did Dianne continue to paint?” He looked at me with hope.
“Not that I ever saw. She had a room I was never allowed in, and after she died, my uncle
cleared the room for his son. I don’t know what was in there, or where it went. I was at school, came home, and they had moved in, and that room was full of his son’s things and a huge bed.”
“I bet she continued to paint, in secret, and your uncle dumped them all or gave them to a junk shop,” Dad said, sadly.
“If her paintings were in the junk shop, then someone out there was enjoying her painting style. There is a storage unit I have been paying for years. My uncle emptied a lot of my mother’s things there, and I have never set foot in it. Want to go check it out someday? See what I have been paying for; it was my mother’s storage unit that I haven’t entered. When I moved out of the family home, I took some stuff, but who knows what. He gave me the storage unit as part of my parting gift. When he didn’t want to see me again, it got changed to my name so that he couldn’t enter it without my permission, or so I believe,” I said, just remembering the unit. I had never thought much about it; the bill comes, and I pay it.
