Joshua turned to David, his gaze dark and deep, making David feel a chill run down his spine. “Understood, Mr. Garcia. I’ll get started right away.” David turned and left the hospital room.

Joshua finally turned his gaze back to Xylia, who lay on the hospital bed.

With just over a week until the anniversary of Laurel’s passing, advancing the schedule shouldn’t cause any significant changes. He needed to find something for Connor to do. He couldn’t let him keep watching over Xylia.

Joshua gently took Xylia’s cold hand. “This time, it’s my turn to protect you.”

At midnight, Xylia finally woke up. The room was dark, only the moonlight streaming through the window illuminated the hospital room, making it feel suffocating.

“Ah!” Xylia cried out in alarm, curling up and scrambling towards the wall.

Hearing her scream, Joshua hung up his phone and rushed into the room in a panic. The light flickered on, illuminating the room.

Seeing Xylia curled up on the bed, Joshua rushed over to her and grabbed her shoulders. “Xylia.”

Xylia instinctively struggled when she felt Joshua’s touch. But his grip was strong, and his warm palm held her firmly. “Xylia, it’s me. Don’t be afraid, it’s me.”

He spoke gently, offering continuous reassurances.

Xylia slowly began to regain her composure, tears clinging to her eyes. Meeting Joshua’s concerned gaze, she instinctively threw herself into his arms. “Joshua…” She cried freely, unrestrained.

Joshua embraced her, feeling a sharp pain in his chest as her sobs wracked her body. He gently patted her back and whispered, “It’s okay, it’s okay.”

Xylia cried for a long time, eventually growing drowsy in his arms.

When her sobs subsided, Joshua gently pulled away. Ignoring the dampness on his shirt, he carefully wiped away the tears from her face. “Would you like me to call the doctor to check on you?”

Xylia didn’t want to be alone in the hospital room. She looked at him with furrowed brows, her eyes filled with apprehension. She still tightly held onto his coat.

Joshua smiled softly, gently holding her hand in return. “Don’t worry, I won’t leave.”

Joshua pressed the call button by the bedside. The nurse and doctor arrived together.

The doctor instructed both the nurse and Joshua to leave the room. Joshua glanced at Xylia. She didn’t react much, so he stepped outside.
