Chapter 253 Breakfast
By the time midnight rolled around, Eleanor and Lydia finally managed to get their hands on some dinner, and they were starving.
The food looked unappetizing, and even though they were hungry, it was hard to choke down.
Eleanor forced herself to eat half of it, but Lydia finished hers, so Eleanor took the remaining half to Lauren.
Kellen had been in the room with Lauren the whole time.
She’d arrived later than usual today.
After she got there, she’d been helping Lauren clean up the room, and she hadn’t expected the Hawthorne family’s situation to be this bad-she hadn’t even gotten dinner herself.

She was just thinking about heading to the kitchen to make something for Lauren when Eleanor walked in carrying half a bowl of what looked like leftovers.
When Kellen saw it, she frowned and said, “Mrs. Hawthorne,
Ms. Drake just gave birth, and the Hawthorne family is feeding her this?”
Lauren hadn’t told Kellen anything-she’d come back today1:17

Even though she was hungry, she’d fallen asleep.
Now, hearing Kellen’s words, she instinctively poked her head out and glanced at what Eleanor was holding.
In that moment, Lauren’s expression darkened.
Eleanor was exhausted now, too, and her stomach was still
empty.
After being tormented by Aurelia all day, she had no strength left, and when she heard Kellen say that, she could barely hold back her anger.
“This is what I got from scrubbing the floors,” Eleanor said through gritted teeth. “What else do you want me to do?”
At this point, she didn’t care about losing face in front of a Drake family servant.
She was just too tired to care anymore.
In the past, Eleanor would’ve held her tongue around the Drake family because she had to think about Marilyn, but now she was past caring.
Her old bones had been worked to the breaking point, and she didn’t have the energy left to worry about saving face.

Kellen’s face darkened when she heard that, and she said, “You were scrubbing floors?”
She looked back and forth between Eleanor and Lauren in
disbelief.
Eleanor didn’t want to talk about it, so she just set down the food and turned to leave.
The door slammed shut with a loud bang.
Kellen flinched at the sound and stared at the leftovers Eleanor
had brought, then looked over at Lauren.
Lauren closed her eyes for a moment, trying to calm down, and then she said, “Kellen, where are you staying right now?”
The Drake family house had been burned and trashed, so Kellen definitely wasn’t living there these days.
When Lauren asked, Kellen said, “I’m staying at my son’s place.”
She wasn’t sure why Lauren was asking, but then she added with a bitter tone, “Once Mrs. Drake gets back and fixes up the house, I’ll move back in.”
From the way she said it, it was clear her son wasn’t exactly thrilled about her staying there.

Lauren had been thinking about asking if she could stay with Kellen during her postpartum recovery, but after hearing that, she couldn’t bring herself to ask.
She just let out a sigh and said, “I don’t even know when my mom’s coming back.”
Aurelia was being absolutely ruthless this time.
She had them trapped so tight that aside from the Hawthorne Manor, they couldn’t go anywhere else.
The Hawthorne Manor had become hell on earth for them.
Lauren couldn’t stop thinking about how cruel and disgusting Aurelia’s actions were, but she’d completely forgotten how they’d treated Aurelia before. Aurelia was just paying them back double.
Eleanor had gone to bed late last night, but she was up early anyway. When Aurelia came downstairs, Eleanor was already helping out, and her sudden diligence made Aurelia smile knowingly.
Sure enough, Gareth leaned in and whispered something in her ear, and Aurelia’s smile deepened. “They never learn, do they?” she murmured. “Guess the last lesson wasn’t enough.”
Gareth’s expression darkened as he glanced toward Eleanor, 4/7

She’d been unusually eager this morning-up before everyone else despite staying up so late. By the time the staff came down, she’d already prepared all the stuff in the kitchen.
Aurelia wasn’t stupid-when something seemed off, it usually was. She and Gareth had been watching Eleanor carefully even before anything suspicious happened, and now that Eleanor was acting strange, they were on even higher alert.
When Aurelia came downstairs, Eleanor hurried over with a glass of milk. “I just warmed it up. The temperature’s perfect.”
Aurelia raised an eyebrow and looked at her. “Didn’t you go to bed pretty late last night? Why are you up so early?”
She kept that knowing smile on her face the whole time she spoke.
Eleanor watched the smile playing at Aurelia’s lips and felt her chest tighten with rage. She was the only one who could smile right now.
She had the nerve to smile after putting them all through this
hell.
But Eleanor swallowed every ounce of her anger and kept it buried deep.
When Aurelia asked, Eleanor forced out the words, “I want 5/7 breakfast.”

Aurelia’s brow lifted slightly, and her smile widened. It was at decent excuse, she had to admit.
They’d been starving for two days, and that pathetic portion last night hadn’t even come close to filling them up.
But Aurelia didn’t buy it for a second. Eleanor wasn’t the type to beg over food.
Soon enough, breakfast arrived at the table. Eleanor handed the fork to Aurelia and said, “I finished my work.”
“Alright then, eat,” Aurelia said.
“What?” Eleanor blinked.
“Sit down and eat,” Aurelia repeated.
Eleanor’s face changed the instant she heard those words.
The color drained from her cheeks, bit by bit, until she’d gone completely pale.
When Eleanor didn’t move, Aurelia raised an eyebrow and looked at her. “What’s wrong? Didn’t you say you wanted breakfast? You’ve been working all morning-sit down and eat something hot.”
Aurelia’s tone was gentle, almost caring.

But to Eleanor, it sounded like pure venom.
She knows, doesn’t she?
