Raelynn's movement was swift and decisive.
She took Ian's ring.
As Sebastian watched her fingers close around the diamond, the neon lights reflecting in his dark eyes seemed to splinter into something sharp and dangerous.
His vision practically blurred with the intensity of his stare.
Ian kept his eyes on Raelynn, stepping seamlessly to her side.
He looked like a victorious general, radiating quiet triumph.
The crowd erupted into a fresh wave of explosive cheers.
Congratulations poured in for Ian from every direction.
Preston, who had been momentarily stalled by Sebastian's comment, instantly relaxed. He raised his glass to Sebastian again. "You worry too much, Mr. Croix! Raelynn clearly isn't opposed to the idea. With a top-tier bachelor like Mr. Hudson, why would any sane woman say no?"
As he spoke, Preston shot a pointed look at the visibly furious Seraphina.
"Our Raelynn is just a bit shy. She likes to keep things modest. Like I said, it's always better when the man steps up. It's just the natural order of things."
Preston played his part perfectly, acting as though he had no idea Sebastian was Raelynn's husband.
Every word was a calculated strike designed to inflict maximum emotional damage.
Sebastian didn't bother responding.
Preston was in high spirits. He didn't care how much the premium champagne cost him, eagerly making his rounds and toasting the other tables.
He was acting like he was the one getting married.
Raelynn couldn't even look at him.
Of course, she knew exactly what Preston was doing.
He was avenging her.
Seraphina had practically paraded her "proposal" in Raelynn's face, trying to weaponize the crowd to force Raelynn into filming it. It was a disgusting display of power and cruelty.
She was endlessly grateful that Ian had derailed the nightmare.
Because of him, she wouldn't have to wake up in cold sweats reliving the humiliation.
And she was deeply grateful to have a friend like Preston standing in her corner.
Yet, from where Raelynn stood, she had a direct line of sight to Sebastian. Everyone around them was reacting to the spectacle.
But the man who had been her husband for seven years sat there like a polite, detached spectator.
It was in this very moment that she finally understood the brutal truth.
For seven years, her devotion to him meant absolutely nothing.
"Thank you." Ian's deep voice broke through her thoughts.
Raelynn looked up.
Ian was looking down at her, his eyes warm and reassuring. He leaned in, his voice pitched so only she could hear. "You took the ring to save me from embarrassment in front of all these people. Don't be nervous, Raelynn."
Raelynn froze. She hadn't expected him to say that.
For a fleeting second, she had genuinely taken the ring out of spite, wanting to prove to Sebastian that she wasn't waiting around for him.
She had also worried about how to untangle herself from this fake engagement later.
But Ian...
He saw right through her.
He framed it as her doing him a favor, giving her the perfect out.
