Chapter 147
“Cass, what the…?”
For a moment, Ashton’s body went rigid-but he did not pull away.
“Don’t I deserve a hug… and maybe a kiss?” she murmured softly, her tone light but laced with something deeper. Her hands began to move slowly, her fingers fumbling with his shirt buttons.
“Cass… no.”
The tension in his voice was immediate. He caught her wrist gently but firmly, stopping her before she could go any further.
She leaned closer instead, closing her eyes for a brief moment as she breathed him in-the faint trace of his perfume mixed with his natural warmth, a scent that stirred memories.
“Didn’t I do well?” she whispered.
“I raised your heir. Don’t I deserve some kind of reward?” There was a teasing curve to her lips.
Ashton drew a slow, steady breath, fighting to keep his composure. Carefully, he loosened her hold and turned around to face her, his expression serious-conflicted.
“Cass… Kai is here,” he said quietly, glancing toward the sleeping boy.
“I don’t want him to see us… doing something that would betray his Dada.”
The word lingered heavily between them.
He ran a hand through his hair before meeting her eyes again, guilt and resolve written clearly across his face.
“CEO Wallace doesn’t deserve this,” he continued, his voice low but firm.
“I’m going to talk to him. About the divorce.”
His jaw tightened slightly.
“We can’t keep going like this… not behind his back.”
There was no anger in Ashton’s tone-only principled honesty and the steady resolve of a man determined to do what was right.
“Now that we have Kai,” he said quietly, his voice softening, “let’s do this properly, Cass. Get the divorce first. I’ll wait-no matter how long the process takes.”
There was no impatience in him. No demand. Only a plea.
“CEO Wallace has done so much for you… and for our son,” he continued, holding her gaze.
“I can see how much Kai loves him. And I can see how much he loves Kai.” His jaw tightened slightly.
୮
“I don’t want to betray him by seducing his wife behind his back.” His eyes searched hers, steady and unflinching.
Cassie met his stare calmly, her expression unreadable.
“I can’t get a divorce,” she said at last.
The words were simple. Firm. Ashton blinked, confusion quickly replacing his composure.
“I can get you a good lawyer,” he replied almost immediately.
“Divorce isn’t that complicated.” He hesitated, his voice faltering.
“Unless… there’s a deeper reason you don’t want to leave him. Unless you really… you really love him…”

The last words came out strained, as if each one cost him something.
Cassie shook her head lightly
“It’s not about feelings,” she said “It’s just that there’s no law that can grant me a divorce.”
She shrugged casually, but the statement only deepened his confusion.
“What do you mean there’s no-”
“Kiss me first and I’ll tell you,” she interrupted sweetly, a playful smile tugging at her lips as she tilted her face up toward him.
“Cass… don’t joke with me like this,” he groaned softly, torn between restraint and desire.
“Just kiss me,” she insisted, rising on her tiptoes, her lips slightly pursed in invitation.
“Cassidy…” he warned, trying to steady himself. He meant to step back. He meant to stop her.
But his resolve was slipping.
The closeness between them blurred his judgment. The familiarity of her touch, the warmth in her eyes, the faint rise and fall of her breath so near his lips-it all pulled at him with dangerous intensity. The small space separating them felt charged, fragile, ready to shatter.
He was one heartbeat away from giving in.
Then-
His heel caught the edge of the couch.
Balance lost.
In a sudden, graceless stumble, Ashton fell backward onto it with a muffled thud-Cassie landing right on top of him.
For a split second, neither of them moved.
Her hair spilled around them like a curtain. One hand braced against his chest. His arm instinctively wrapped around her waist to keep her from falling further. Their faces were inches apart.
Too close.
The air between them grew heavy, charged with everything they had been holding back-weeks of distance, restraint, and unspoken longing. Sensing his hesitation wavering, Cassie took the chance.\

Before he could regain his composure, she closed the small space between them and pressed her lips against his-claiming the kiss she had so boldly demanded.
“Cass…” Ashton’s protest came out as a strained breath, his voice low and unsteady.
But the resistance in him weakened almost instantly.
It had been weeks since they had allowed themselves this kind of intimacy. And now, with her in his arms, the familiarity of her touch felt both overwhelming and achingly right.
The kiss deepened-not hurried, but hungry. Not reckless, but filled with everything they had missed.
There was longing in it. Relief. A quiet desperation neither of them cared to hide anymore.
For a moment, the world beyond the couch faded- the promises to do things the right way.
All that existed was the warmth between them…and the undeniable desire for each other.

And then-
“Mama… Papa?”
The soft, sleepy voice cut cleanly through the charged silence.
Both of them froze.
Slowly-very slowly-they turned their heads toward the bed.
Kai was sitting upright, rubbing one eye, blinking at the sight before him with innocent confusion.
“Are you going to make me a brother or a sister?”
Silence.
Ashton and Cassie stared at him, utterly speechless, their earlier tension dissolving into stunned disbelief.
The innocent question came at the worst—and most perfect-possible moment. Kai’s timing was impeccable.
