A moment later, a heavy-set woman clutching a spatula charged out of the kitchen.

"Who's there?"

Willa looked up and instantly recognized her as her aunt, Martha Vance.

Martha froze for a second before recognizing her, the annoyance on her face rapidly twisting into pure disgust. "What are you doing here?"

Willa crossed her arms and scoffed. "This is my house. Do I need your permission to come back to my own home?"

"Your house?" Martha shrieked in protest. "Before your dad got locked up, he already transferred this place to our Desmond."

Willa swallowed her rage. "Where's the deed transfer? I want to see it."

She remembered it perfectly. Before her father went to prison, her uncle's family had offered to look after the property, but her father had never once mentioned signing it over to them.

"Desmond keeps the paperwork locked away, obviously." Martha's eyes darted away shiftily, and she reached out to shove Willa. "Get out of here. Don't just stand around bringing your bad luck into this house and ruining our fortune."

Just then, her cousin, Travis Vance, strolled out of one of the bedrooms with a cigarette dangling from his lips, leaning lazily against the doorframe. "Well, well, if it isn't Willa. Didn't you run off overseas to live the high life? What's wrong? Couldn't cut it, so you came back to steal our house?"

"Before my dad went to prison, I organized all his documents myself. The deed had his name on it. You people are trespassing!"

"Bullshit!" Martha raised her voice, yelling like a maniac. "If our Desmond hadn't busted his ass bribing people and pulling strings, do you think your dad would be living so comfortably in there? Using this house to pay us back is only fair!"

Willa let out a cynical laugh, her eyes dripping with sarcasm.

Since when did Desmond Vance ever lift a finger to help them?

Five years ago, when Willa was maliciously harassed by those people and had nowhere left to turn, her so-called uncle had never even shown his face. Now they were giving themselves all the credit.
