Now that there was suddenly a tiny life growing inside her, she should have been overjoyed.
But why did it have to happen at a time like this?
She glanced at the wedding invitation resting on the nightstand, and the sour nausea instantly crept back up her throat.
She didn't know how to make this choice. She wanted to keep the baby, but she absolutely refused to let him be born into the world carrying the title of an illegitimate child.
Exhaustion slowly dragged her under. Before she could make a definitive decision, she drifted into a heavy, restless sleep.
The sound of footsteps startled her awake. A hand reached out, gently tugging down the blanket she had pulled over her face. "Sleeping with your head covered like that—doesn't it feel suffocating?"
As fresh air rushed into her lungs, Willa instantly felt she could breathe easier.
"The nurse said you didn't eat anything today. Are you still feeling sick?"
Willa's heart skipped a beat, completely unsure of exactly how much the nurse had told him.
Then he added, "I checked with the doctor. He said there aren't any major issues. Just focus on healing and don't worry about anything else."
She let out a silent sigh of relief and mumbled a quiet "hmm." After a moment of hesitation, she spoke up. "Randal, I want to be discharged."
She couldn't afford to drag this out any longer. But how could she possibly slip past Randal to get a prenatal checkup?
"Your injuries haven't healed yet. Stay a few more days," Randal insisted stubbornly.
"Give me my phone back first, then. I still have work to deal with," Willa countered.
Randal hesitated for a second before pulling the phone out of his pocket and handing it to her. "Just look at it for a little bit. Don't exhaust yourself."
Willa scrolled through her messages.
Martin Jenson had sent a few updates regarding the cultural heritage project, and Iris Underwood asked when she would be discharged.
Sophie had sent a remarkably long string of voice notes. Willa tapped play, only to be met with a barrage of curses aimed entirely at Randal.
The man sitting next to her turned practically green listening to it.
She offered an awkward smile. "You're not going to be petty about this, right?"
Randal's face remained thunderous, but he managed to swallow his temper.
He sat on the edge of the bed, reached over to pull the blanket up over her shoulders, and said flatly, "Stop listening to her insult me."
Willa blinked in surprise. "Why?"
