Sophie leaned heavily against her, still muttering faint groans of pain, but Willa could distinctly feel that she was secretly holding back laughter.
"Your acting was actually pretty good," Willa whispered.
"Obviously. Do you know who I am? I've binge-watched Grey's Anatomy eight times for a reason," Sophie whispered back, utterly failing to suppress the triumphant smirk pulling at the corners of her mouth.
The moment they stepped into the OB/GYN lobby, Sophie instantly dropped the act. She grabbed Willa and dragged her toward the consultation rooms. "Hurry, hurry! I just checked you in online."
Willa stumbled slightly from the pull, keeping her voice low as she hissed, "Slow down, my back is still killing me!"
Sophie finally remembered Willa was still an actual patient and quickly slowed her pace. "Room 1. Just walk right in."
The doctor asked a few basic questions about her last menstrual cycle before printing out an order for an ultrasound.
During the ultrasound, Willa stared at the monitor, her heart racing with chaotic panic, right until the faint *thump-thump* sound echoed from the machine.
The doctor announced it was the fetal heartbeat.
In that exact instant, a deeply buried part of Willa's heart instantly melted.
She realized, with overwhelming clarity, that a tiny, fragile life connected to her very bloodline was currently growing inside her womb.
After printing the results, the doctor turned to her. "It's an early intrauterine pregnancy. The gestational sac measures at six weeks. Fetal pole and heartbeat are both present, and everything is developing normally right now. If you do not plan on proceeding with the pregnancy, you need to schedule the surgery as soon as possible."
Willa was rendered speechless for a long moment. A mess of conflicting emotions raged inside her. She was already so deeply attached to it, yet terrified to carelessly bring it into this world.
"We're keeping it, we're keeping the baby," Sophie immediately blurted out, jumping in before Willa could speak.
Willa hurriedly asked the doctor if the medications she had been taking would affect the baby's development.
The doctor carefully reviewed her medical history and informed her that the current impact seemed minimal, but she absolutely had to attend all her regular prenatal checkups to closely monitor the baby's condition.
Only then did Willa's suspended heart finally settle a fraction. Clutching the medical report, she thanked the doctor and walked out of the clinic with Sophie.
