The moment the words left her mouth, she regretted them.
It sounded far too bitter, making her look desperately insecure.
"What exactly did you hear?" he asked, sitting back on the edge of the bed. His voice dropped, laced with a flicker of panic. "Don't listen to a single word anyone else says."
A wry smile curved Willa's lips. "But Randal, aren't you the biggest liar in the world?"
Randal had no defense. He reached out and pulled her into his arms, his voice softening into a plea. "Willa, the only reason I lied was because I couldn't lose you. I never wanted to hurt you."
Willa pulled back slightly, looking up at him. "And what are you planning to do about Stella?"
He ignored the question, hastily blurting out, "I didn't touch her."
She extracted herself from his embrace completely, leaning against the headboard, watching him intently as she waited for the rest of the story.
Forced to continue, Randal braced himself. "She slipped something into my hangover cure..."
"So did you..."
Before she could finish, he frantically cut her off. "Even if I was out of my mind, I'd still know if I actually slept with someone!"
She stared at him with blatant skepticism, deliberately teasing him. "So, does Mr. Yates have a little dysfunction in that department?"
Randal choked on a breath, completely derailed by her words. Even in the dark, she could feel every muscle in his body instantly lock up.
A second later, he surged forward, planting his hands on either side of her and trapping her against the headboard. "You know damn well whether I have a dysfunction or not," he growled through gritted teeth.
Willa's heart skipped a nervous beat. Terrified he might actually lose control, she quickly changed the subject. "What are you going to do about Stella?"
"I'm going to make sure Warren learns exactly how to discipline his daughter."
He cast a hesitant glance her way. "As for you..."
