The muscles in Randal's jaw twitched involuntarily.
He leaned forward abruptly, planting his hands firmly on either side of her bed. His Adam's apple bobbed heavily as he stared at her, his eyes swirling with agony and intense struggle.
Willa's spine instantly stiffened, suddenly regretting her thoughtless, provocative remark.
Yet, the violent storm she braced for never came.
Staring at her, Randal slowly exhaled a heavy breath, forcibly suppressing the terrifying darkness in his eyes. When he spoke, his tone held a coaxing softness.
"That's right, I'm generous. So be a good girl and stop trying to piss me off."
Willa was stunned, momentarily unsure of how to react.
Just then, the phone on the nightstand vibrated violently. The caller ID flashed Corbin's name.
The name instantly ignited the residual tension lingering in the air.
Willa's heart skipped a beat, and she instinctively reached for the phone.
But Randal was faster. He snatched the phone and outright rejected the call.
"Why did you hang up?" Willa demanded anxiously.
Randal smoothly blocked the number and powered off the device without a second's hesitation, his brow furrowing. "You two have no reason to be in contact anymore."
Willa struggled to sit up, but the movement pulled at her abdomen, making her wince.
"I just wanted to ask him how Sophie is doing. I haven't been able to reach her. Did you do something to..."
"It wasn't me," Randal cut her off, clearly agitated. "Regardless of what you think about me, I wouldn't stoop to targeting the Sommers family's women first."
He paused, then added in a somber tone, "I'll have someone look into her situation. You just focus on resting here, and stop looking for excuses to contact outsiders."
The nurse returned to change her dressing and take her temperature. It read ninety-nine degrees.
With her fever gone, her entire body felt much lighter. Exhaustion soon washed over her, and she fell asleep shortly after.
When she opened her eyes again, the room was draped in darkness.
The main lights were off, the curtains half-drawn, and a faint stream of light from the streetlamps outside spilled in, illuminating Randal.
"No," he refused firmly. "You can't get out of bed right now. The doctor gave strict orders for bed rest."
"I just want to see her for one second..."
"Be good. You're not going."
A week later, Willa was finally cleared for discharge.
Her daily routine was meticulously managed. Randal even hired a professional nutritionist to curate her pregnancy meals, though he also added two more bodyguards to keep watch over her.
Willa was resentful but didn't want to provoke him, choosing instead to accept it in silence.
As for updates on Sophie, she only received fragmented pieces of information from Randal each day.
He told her Sophie had woken up and was transferred to a regular ward. He also mentioned the Sommers family discovered Stella Whitman was the mastermind behind the crash.
But the more Willa thought about it, the more suspicious it seemed.
Stella certainly hated Sophie, but the car crash had been executed flawlessly. Even the police were leaning toward classifying it as a pure accident.
