Willa was momentarily stunned.
A cold, cynical smirk tugged at the corner of Florence's lips. "Whoever can effortlessly pull surveillance footage from a private club is definitely not a run-of-the-mill colleague. Use your brain and think about it."
Before Willa could even formulate a response, Florence strutted away with her mug in hand.
Willa stood frozen in place, staring at Florence's retreating figure as a chaotic surge of complicated emotions flooded her chest.
This was the first time Florence had ever voluntarily spoken to her about anything unrelated to work.
Even though her tone was as glacial as ever... was that her way of offering a warning?
The Integrity Division's investigation wrapped up far quicker than anyone had anticipated.
By the third day, the editor-in-chief called to inform her that the whistleblower's materials lacked sufficient evidence. The investigation was officially terminated, and she was cleared to resume working, albeit under a strict three-month probationary review.
Willa marched straight back into the office that very afternoon.
The second Chloe spotted her, she hurried over, her eyes brimming with genuine relief. "Willa, I knew you were framed! This is amazing news!"
As Florence breezed past them, she effortlessly dropped a cynical remark. "Your probation isn't over yet. Don't throw a parade just yet."
Willa nodded in agreement, offering no rebuttal.
She knew Florence was absolutely right. The only reason she had survived this execution was because the evidence the whistleblower held wasn't lethal enough.
But there was no guarantee that person would simply let this go.
However, she still didn't have the slightest clue who the invisible puppeteer was.
After turning the puzzle over in her mind, Willa decided it was time to test the most obvious suspect: Lana Thorne.
She carried her mug into the pantry. Lana was lounging against the window, nursing a cup of coffee. The second she saw Willa, a malicious, theatrical glee sparked in her eyes.
"Well, look who it is. Isn't this our recently exonerated golden girl? The scandal just barely died down, yet you're already so desperate to show your face at work?
Willa couldn't even be bothered to entertain her taunts. She calmly filled her mug and pivoted to leave.
But Lana clearly had no intention of letting her go, sauntering after her. "Willa, don't kid yourself into thinking you're safe just because you survived this one hurdle.
"If whoever reported you managed to get their hands on private security footage, who knows what else they're sitting on. Tell me, do you really think you'll be this lucky next time?"
