Bound by the Past, Locked by the Heart novel Chapter 40

For two whole years after they split, she had been unable to break free from the wreckage of a romance that had died at its most passionate peak.

She had been plagued by nightmares, completely unable to let go.

She had no intention of rekindling any old flames with Randal. Some truths were better left buried forever.

Randal sat in the car, watching her retreating figure until she disappeared. Unable to hold back his frustration, he slammed his fist hard against the door panel.

"Randal, don't take your anger out on my car," Miles sauntered over and tapped on the window.

Randal pulled his gaze away, opened the door, and stepped out. He tossed the keys to Miles. "Take your junker and get out of here."

"Junker?" Miles was highly offended by the insult to his prized ride. "This is a limited edition. I begged my dad for a whole month to get this."

He caught the keys and trailed after Randal, his gossip radar pinging. "Randal, what did you two talk about? Why did it look like Willa was ready to take you down with her?"

Randal stopped in his tracks and turned around, his voice turning icy. "Do you have too much free time? Spend more time learning the business from your brother instead of fooling around all day. You can't keep living like a slacker forever."

Hearing Randal bring up his brother sparked a rare flash of temper in Miles. "You guys always think I can never measure up to my brother. Randal, I never thought I'd hear that from you. Shouldn't you relate to me more than anyone? Your brother..."

He stopped abruptly, the words dying in his throat.

He slapped himself lightly on the cheek. "Randal, don't be mad. I was out of line."

Randal stood frozen in place for a long time, the color draining slightly from his face.

"Just go home," he finally said after a long silence, before turning and walking away.

——

Willa sat in the interview room, facing her third prospect of the day.
