"Thank you so much, Ms. Sherman."
Willa hung up, unable to sit still.
Less than ten minutes later, Ms. Sherman called back, her tone laced with apology and helplessness. "I just spoke to HR. She said the big boss personally vetoed it."
"The big boss?"
Ms. Sherman sighed. "He never involves himself in entry-level hiring. I'm completely baffled as to why he intervened this time. Ms. Vance, I am incredibly sorry. I thought it was a guaranteed lock..."
Willa didn't hear a single word of comfort after that.
After ending the call, she hesitantly fired off a text to Randal: [Are you the one messing with my job?]
He replied instantly: [Why would you want to stay at some tiny company like that? I told you I could get you something much better.]
Willa gritted her teeth: [Randal, you are absolutely despicable.]
As soon as she sent the text, a voice call from him popped up on her screen.
She rejected it without a second thought.
He didn't call back. She leaned against the sofa, a suffocating weight settling in her chest. But looking at her nearly empty bank account, she forced herself to sit up, opened the job-hunting app, and continued sending out resumes.
She refused to believe Randal possessed the power to manipulate the entire corporate world of Norvale.
Just as practically every resume she sent out vanished into the void, an unknown number called her. It was an interview invitation from Starlight Media.
Willa searched her memory and recalled submitting a resume to them right after returning to the country.
It had been over two months—why were they only calling her for an interview now?
She was highly skeptical, but the desperation of her constant rejections forced her to cling to this shred of hope.
She went to the interview burdened with doubt, only to find the process outrageously smooth.
