Bound by the Past, Locked by the Heart novel Chapter 84

"Didn't you say you had something to tell me?" she asked in frustration.

Randal looked away. "There's no rush. Let's see if the food still tastes the same."

The dishes arrived quickly.

Randal picked up his silverware, placed a piece of glazed rib on her plate, and then took one for himself.

Willa watched him eat, suddenly curious. "I thought you didn't like sweet food?"

He paused with his fork mid-air, glancing up at her with an emotion she couldn't decipher.

"People change."

Willa felt a sharp pang in her chest and looked down to take a bite of the rib.

But after just one bite, she frowned.

The flavor was entirely different from what she remembered. The tang overwhelmed the sweetness, heavy enough to bring a lump to her throat.

Halfway through the bite, she set her fork down.

"I'm full. Can you tell me now?"

Randal glanced at her virtually untouched food, didn't say a word, and set his own silverware down.

"I know about the person tracking you."

Willa stared straight at him, unsurprised.

If he had been watching her this whole time, it wouldn't be hard for him to notice someone else was doing the same.

"It wasn't Scarlett," he continued.

Willa's breath caught in her throat, leaving her suffocating in the silence.

So all of this, all the grand gestures, were just to defend Scarlett.

"I know," she said, curling her hands into tight fists under the table, her voice entirely devoid of emotion.

"I'm not making excuses for her," he said. "Scarlett isn't that tactless."
