Giselle noticed Chris the moment he stepped inside.
She instinctively pulled back from Donovan's kiss and murmured, "Let's go upstairs later. It's not great to be seen like this down here."
"What's the problem?"
Donovan glanced toward Chris as if he were no different from the household guards or maids, then kissed her cheek with even more careless boldness.
"This is my house. You're my darling. I'll do whatever I want." His voice brushed her ear in a low whisper.
But Giselle couldn't shake the feeling of embarrassment. She had no issue being affectionate with Donovan in front of the household staff, yet something about doing it in front of Chris made her strangely self-conscious.
Chris didn't withdraw. Instead, he walked toward them without expression, stopping at the coffee table.
"Mrs. Kane," he said quietly, head bowed. "Your coat. Where would you like it?"
"Just leave it on the couch."
"Alright."
Donovan kept an arm around Giselle and spoke without warmth. "If you don't have other instructions, don't come into the living room. I'll have Heath assign you different duties."
"Yes, Mr. Kane." Chris stood still for a few seconds before turning and walking out.
He had barely stepped outside when Heath intercepted him, lowering his voice in reprimand.
"Chris, did you not see Mr. and Mrs. Kane in the living room? Why did you go in? Next time, use your eyes. When you see them being intimate, you disappear."
She added, "That way, I don't even need to hire an assistant. He can be my bodyguard and also help with company matters. Perfect arrangement, right?"
Donovan didn't find anything overtly wrong with the idea, but his tone shifted slightly. "You're quite the considerate boss."
Giselle laughed, looped her arms around his neck, and kissed him. "Stop talking about irrelevant people. I want a shower."
"Let's go. Together." These days, he couldn't help imagining her slipping in the shower and harming the baby, so he insisted on being there.
They locked the bedroom door behind them and stepped into the en-suite bathroom. Once their clothes were off, he pulled her back against him, kissing her with growing urgency until he could barely keep himself in check.
"Not tonight." She pushed lightly at his hand. "My pregnancy is not even three months yet. It's the most unstable stage. I don't want anything too intense to cause trouble."
But his mind was already filled with the thought. He lowered his voice against her ear. "I'll be gentle."
