"It's alright. I'll stand." Chris still knew his place and merely stood off to the side like before.
Donovan gave a cold snort. "I already fired you. We're not in an employment relationship now. We're equals now. If I tell you to sit, you sit."
Chris paused, then sat on the nearby couch.
Seeing him sitting bolt upright—silent and obedient—Donovan couldn't help wondering if he'd really wronged him last time. But he didn't want to waste time building up to anything.
He opened a drawer, took out several printed photos he'd prepared long ago, and tossed them in front of Chris. "I called you here today to talk about this woman."
The instant Chris saw the photos, his expression stiffened. His usually steady heartbeat abruptly sped up.
The woman in the photos was none other than Anne.
Fortunately, Donovan had turned to look out the window and didn't notice the unnatural tension on Chris' face, though cold sweat had already broken across his skin.
"You should know who this woman is, right?" Donovan said, still looking outside.
Chris drew a deep breath and replied with feigned calm, "I don't know her. You said before that she's dangerous and mustn't be allowed near Mrs. Kane. That's all I know."
Donovan stared out the window for a long time without speaking. No one knew what he was thinking.
While waiting, Chris' heart pounded with dread. He didn't know why Donovan had suddenly brought up Anne. Could he already know the truth?
At last, Donovan turned back. "This woman is the biggest threat at the moment."
He then briefly outlined the series of grudges and entanglements between him and Anne. He mentioned her current backing and finally stated his intention.
Seeing his hesitation, Donovan's expression darkened.
"I like smart people. And you, Chris, are one of the smartest I've met." His voice dropped. "If someone is smart and willing to work for me, I can save him a lifetime of struggle. I'll give you a day. Think it through and give me your answer."
"No need to think," Chris answered at once. "I'll do it."
As a seasoned man from the streets, how could he even hesitate?
Someone of Donovan's level had personally come to him for this—this wasn't a negotiation. If he refused, he'd lose Donovan's trust completely and could forget about staying here.
Not only was he willing to do it, but he also wanted to take it even further.
