Under Donovan's pampering, Giselle no longer had to live bristling with thorns as before. There was no more cynicism, no manic outbursts, and no more constant worrying. She'd almost turned into a silly sweetheart.
They hadn't chatted long when a housekeeper came in and said to Donovan, "Mr. Kane, Mrs. Kane Senior and Mrs. Grace are here. They say they want to visit Mrs. Kane. Should we let them in?"
Donovan refused outright. "Tell them she's on strict bed rest and isn't up for visitors."
"Let them in," Giselle said. "Dorothea isn't an outsider. She's willing to come to the hospital in person to see me, and you're shutting her out? Are you even human?"
As if he'd been waiting for that, Donovan chuckled and had the housekeeper open the door.
Moments later, Dorothea entered the ward, with Grace trailing behind. Adrian waited outside.
"Giselle." Dorothea approached the bedside, her eyes full of concern. "I only heard yesterday that you had a fright and were hospitalized to stabilize your pregnancy. How are you now? Is the baby alright?"
"We're alright now. Thank you for your concern, Dorothea." Giselle smiled. "It's actually been almost a week. I didn't want you to worry, so I kept it from you. Now that everything's fine, I'm letting you know."
Grace cleared her throat, her face twisted with that familiar snide expression. "And here I thought it was something big. Just now, when I came in, the housekeeper actually stopped me, saying she needed approval. Even family members are guarded like this. I thought the baby was in serious trouble!"
"Shut up!" Dorothea's face clouded instantly. "Look at the timing. Can't you hold your tongue for once? I told you not to come, but you insisted on tagging along. You're here just to stir up trouble, aren't you?"
Dorothea turned back to Giselle. "What was it that scared you so badly? I thought you hired bodyguards for exactly this reason—how on earth did something still happen under their watch?"
Giselle waved a hand dismissively, her voice airy and practiced. "It was nothing, really. I just lost my footing on the stairs and caught myself at the last second. It gave me a bit of a fright, but it wasn't serious."
Dorothea's eyes widened. "You're too careless! It wasn't easy to conceive this child. From now on, just stay at home and stay put. It would be best not to go anywhere! I think I'd better move in with you two. With you like this, I can't rest easy unless I watch you every day!"
