Breaking Mr. Cold (Giselle and Donovan) novel Chapter 761

"Don't say another word," Gideon said in a low, grief-stricken voice. "I'm not going anywhere now. I caused this tragedy, and I'll face it with you."

But Marselle merely let out a bitter laugh. She no longer felt the slightest bit of affection, even at this rare moment of tenderness from Gideon. Her heart was now barren, her expression stiff, her gaze vacant, her hands and feet icy cold.

Before long, Ethan arrived at the ward as well, having just heard the news.

"What on earth happened?" Confronted with this sudden, devastating blow, Ethan was both shocked and furious. "How could something happen to the baby all of a sudden?"

With his head lowered, Gideon stuttered out the truth. "It… It was my fault."

The moment Ethan heard what Gideon had done, he slapped him hard in a fit of rage. "Do you even have a single shred of humanity left in you? Marselle was carrying your own flesh and blood, with only a few months to go before delivery. It's terrible enough that you didn't take good care of her, but how could you have dared to raise your hand against her?"

Gideon said nothing. He stood by the window, letting Ethan berate him without offering any defense.

Ethan then softened into the demeanor of a future father-in-law, going to Marselle's bedside to soothe her gently, "Marselle, no matter what we do, what's done is done. Right now, your first priority is taking care of yourself. I'll teach Gideon a proper lesson. I hope you can forgive him for what he's done to you."

He hadn't felt anything for the child in Marselle's belly, at first. Back then, he'd simply wanted to keep it out of spite— if Giselle and Donovan were having a child, then having one with another woman would be his way of getting even.

But as time passed and he watched Marselle's belly grow day by day, his anticipation for this child mounted with each sunrise.

He'd seen the ultrasound while accompanying Marselle to her checkups. The baby had already developed into a fully formed little person, with a heartbeat, limbs, and had even had its sex identified as a boy…

And now the child was gone, killed by his own father. For the first time in his life, Gideon was tormented by a profound pang of guilt.
