Chris finally knew for certain. The little boy in the photo was the second son he had lost all those years ago.
Five years ago, the boy had been kidnapped by an enemy when he was barely over a year old. Chris had exhausted every possible resource to get him back. But in the end, the enemy still chose to kill the child, even sending him a video with a gun pressed to the boy's head to torment him.
At the end of that video, all he heard was a gunshot and the boy's piercing scream before the screen went black.
He never did see his son's body. The enemy told him that the boy had been thrown into the sea after being killed. Crushed by grief at the time, he was too broken to pursue the remains. Deep down, he accepted that his son was gone.
But now, he was seeing these two clear photos. The boy resembled his eldest son so much, with eyes identical to his late wife's, and the birthmark behind his ear—he could hardly believe it. He even suspected the photos were photoshopped, yet in his heart he hoped they were real.
Just then, he received a new email in his inbox—once again from Kori.
He opened the email. The attachment was a short video, just a few minutes long.
He downloaded and opened the video and saw a group of child soldiers holding guns, playing a deadly game of fate. The children took turns pointing guns at their own heads and pulling the trigger, knowing only one contained a bullet.
One unlucky child happened to get the loaded one and was shot dead.
What made his heart clench even tighter was that his poor little son was among them.
He knew full well local militants had trained these children to be killing machines. They were still children, yet full of violence, robbed of carefree innocence and turned into tools of war.
The more Chris watched, the more his heart broke. At the end of the video, his hands were shaking so badly he could hardly hold his phone.
Soon, he dialed Kori's number from earlier.
When the call connected, he ground his teeth and asked, "My son… he didn't die? He's been in your hands all this time?"
