They barely lingered. No drinks, no buzz–just a couple of glasses of lemon water before they called it a night.
When Elijah arrived to pick Winona up, he paused mid–step. Seeing Serena there clearly wasn’t what he expected. What is Sebastian’s girlfriend doing here?
Winona offered to give her a ride, but Serena declined with a soft refusal. As her figure disappeared into the distance, Winona frowned, clearly bothered. “Great. I definitely messed up. I think I accidentally upset Rena.”
Elijah’s brows drew together. “What did you do?” After listening to the explanation, he gave a quiet, knowing chuckle. Then he pulled out his phone and typed a message. “Mr. Levine, I ran into your girlfriend tonight. She looked pretty down. Interested in knowing why?”
Sebastian’s tolerance was a scarce resource. What little he had, he reserved almost exclusively for Serena. Everyone else received none of it. He did not bother with pleasantries. His tone was flat, restrained, and final. “Get to the point.”
Elijah let out a quiet click of his tongue. So much for trying to provoke him. He did not rise to bait, not even slightly. For a fleeting second, Elijah wondered if Sebastian’s “girlfriend” really held that much weight after all. In elite circles, emotions were often temporary. Affection was often measured, replaceable.
“There’s no big drama,” he said lazily. “If anyone misstepped, it was my girlfriend. She had good intentions. Thought she could help your girlfriend by introducing a client.”
He paused, then continued casually, “What no one expected was that the client wanted to go after your family’s adopted daughter, Amber. After that, Trevor stepped in. Handled it quietly. End of story.”
He added, almost as an afterthought, “Wasn’t Serena almost Trevor’s bride at one point? Now the position’s been replaced. It’s only natural she wouldn’t be fond of Amber.”
It almost sounded as though he was smoothing things over on Serena’s behalf, but the way he said it instantly grated on Sebastian. Sebastian’s voice cut in, cool and precise. “You’ve got it the wrong way around. Trevor was the one who got dumped.”
Elijah stalled mid–thought. Ah, right. I had messed that up. He had not attended the wedding himself, but afterward Julian had mentioned it in passing–how Trevor had been publicly humiliated by the bride.
Still, was there really a need for Sebastian to stress it so pointedly? He quickly adjusted, forcing a light, appeasing laugh. “Right, Serena was the one who ditched Trevor first.”
A cold, faint scoff came through the line. Then the call went dead. He gave a sharp, irritated smack of his tongue. “Wow. He just cut the line on me?”
“Good. You earned it,” Winona snapped, cheeks puffed in displeasure.
Elijah tilted his head, jaw flexing as he toyed his tongue against the roof of his mouth. “Winona, explain something to me. What did I do to earn that?”
Before he could lean in any closer, she pushed him back, her playful mood gone. Her expression hardened, unusually solemn. “Elijah, Serena is my friend. Someone I care about. If you ever talk about her in that tone again, don’t expect me to let it go.”
He blinked, genuinely caught off guard. They had only crossed paths twice—he hadn’t realized the bond ran that deep. “Alright, Message received.”

Just then, his phone vibrated insistently. Winona’s eyes flicked to the screen, catching the caller’s name. She lifted her gaze and met his evasive look. Her chest tightened. “Why don’t you answer it?”
He paused, then flipped the phone over, hiding the display. “Junk call. Nothing important.” Her lips curved faintly, not quite a smile. She turned her head toward the window, staring out into the night, thoughts swirling silently beneath her calm exterior.
That same evening, almost in eerie sync with Ethan telling Serena that he was dropping the lawsuit against Levine Studios, a new topic crept onto the entertainment trending list: ‘Levine Studio’s Rising Musical Prodigy Shocks the Scene!
By the time Serena noticed, it had already secured third place. She saw the alert pop up and clicked out of idle curiosity. The numbers spoke for themselves. Amber’s social media had exploded overnight, her follower count jumping by 500,000.
Even more telling was the sudden chorus of acclaim–well–known industry critics lavishing her album with praise and framing it as a rare, high–quality release. Serena let out a silent scoff. So that was it. The money had gone in.
Once money and influence start clearing the path, even an artist with only passable ability can be elevated into visibility. Whether the fire is genuine or artificially fanned no longer matters–attention, after all, is still attention.
The praise was relentless–some lauded Amber Jacobs for her striking looks and silky voice, while others painted her as a “musical fairy,” heaping every flourish of extravagant compliment on her.
“Levine Studios actually poured resources into a rookie? She must really have talent. Just listened to her new track–pretty impressive!”
“Haha, you think she’s just another newcomer? She’s basically royalty! All that extravagant promotion? It’s just Mr. Trevor buying a spectacular engagement gift for his fiancée.”
Serena shut the comment feed, the pieces falling into place–suddenly, Ethan’s decision to back out made perfect sense.
