Chapter 153 Troubles Incoming
‘Rena, answer the phone.’
Serena read the line again, and a dull weight settled in her chest.
Why did Sebastian sound like he was soothing a lover?

She had never once labeled herself his girlfriend. In her mind, they were two adults taking what they needed from each other. Nothing more.
Sebastian was considerate. Gentle. Almost dangerously so.
But she knew how that road ended–admiration turning into attachment, attachment into love, and love into abandonment. She had already survived that collapse once.
She allowed herself to be selfish this time.
No reply tonight.
Serena pulled the blanket over her head and forced her eyes shut.
Across the city, Sebastian stared at his screen, jaw tight, expression unreadable.
He waited.
Minutes stretched.
Still nothing.
Maybe she really was asleep.
Julian answered groggily, voice thick with sleep. He squinted at the caller ID and sighed. “Mr. Levine… what emergency requires midnight consultation now?”
How many late–night calls had this man made already?
“I need an answer,” Sebastian said. “Why do women ignore messages?”
Julian blinked awake. “Excuse me?”
“Why don’t women reply to texts?”
A short, dry laugh escaped him. Of course. The untouchable Mr. Levine had fallen into romance again.
“Well,” Julian drawled, “most of the time, if a woman doesn’t respond, it means the guy annoys her. That’s the standard interpretation.”
He added lazily, “Someone leave you on read, Mr. Levine?”
The line went dead.
Julian stared at his phone. “Unbelievable,” he muttered. Not even one second to tease.

Nathan saw Trevor’s missed calls the second he stepped off the plane.
“Trevor, you called?”
Trevor pressed his fingers to his temple. “It’s handled, Dad.”
After that slap earlier, the trending news barely registered anymore.
Besides, his assistant had already reported that the tag was losing heat.
Nathan didn’t buy it. “You’re sure?”
“Yeah.”
Dozens of calls didn’t scream fine to him.
Moments later, an aide handed Nathan a phone.
“Mr. Nathan, it’s about Ms. Jacobs. The plagiarism accusations trended for hours. Mr. Trevor may have been contacting you over
that.”
With the wedding approaching, trouble multiplied by the day.
Nathan dialed Amber.
“Dad? It’s late. Is something wrong?”
A sharp breath left him. “You really don’t know?”
“Amber, I’ve treated you as family. So has your brother. So has your mother. We never asked for repayment. But must the Levine name keep getting dragged through messes like these?”
Her heart tightened.
“Dad… you saw the trending topic?”
“It stayed up for five hours. Of course I saw it.”
