By the time Serena drove into the parking garage, her phone was vibrating nonstop.
Shawn texted, “Serena, what’s going on? HR just blasted your suspension in the main chat.”
Lily followed right after, “Serena, are you okay? You at the office yet? Did you see the message?”
Serena read through the messages. “I’m downstairs. Coming up.”
She only replied to Lily.
Upstairs, Eugene stood in Adam’s office, pushing back hard.
“Mr. Rowe, why suspend Serena?”
Adam looked uneasy. “Eugene, I know you care about her. But the firm has rules. She assisted Ethan with that plagiarism and infringement case against Levine Studios. If no one noticed, maybe I would let it slide. But Nathan himself complained. We’re handling their merger. Tell me how that looks.”
“She helped a friend,” Eugene argued. “That’s not a crime. And she wasn’t lead counsel. She cleared it with me. Did the Levine Group officially protest? Because the merger lead isn’t Nathan. It’s Sebastian.”
Meaning Nathan technically had no authority over the deal.
Adam snapped back, “You’re being reckless. Sebastian is still a member of the Levine family. You think he watches his nephew get dragged and stays quiet?”
He added, “Do you even know who Trevor’s backing right now? That rookie is the future Mrs.
Levine.”
“Let the suspension stand. Let the heat die down. She only returns after.”
Eugene’s jaw tightened. “Do you understand what a suspension does to someone’s career?”
He had planned to push Serena toward a non–equity partner after the merger closed.
