Chapter 161 Her Diary
Kyana’s lips quivered. She despised the way her dad phrased it.
He framed it as though she and her mom were mere intruders, while he and Serena constituted the true family.
Kyana’s glare at Serena was sharp, simmering with barely contained fury.
Serena’s lips curved in a subtle, inward sneer. “Alright, Dad, I’m leaving.”

“Okay, drive carefully,” Donald responded, his tone dripping with the pretense of the devoted parent.
But to Serena, he felt utterly hypocritical.
Back at the Steele Residence, Serena approached her grandma’s portrait and lit the candles with reverent hands.
Sherry noticed her return and, aware that they had climbed the mountain to visit Judith, exhaled with quiet sentiment. “Ms. Steele, you’re back.”
“Sherry, I’m feeling a touch hungry. Is there anything available to eat?”
“Of course! I prepared soup this morning, anticipating your return. I’ll fetch you a bowl immediately.”
Serena’s lips curved into a gentle smile. “Thank you, Sherry. That would be lovely.“.
After the mourning period, her visits to the Steele Residence would become infrequent- especially with the forthcoming plan to marry Sebastian.
She made her way to Donald’s study in search of her voter registration card.
Her records were still officially linked to Donald. After the registration, she intended to transfer them to her own name.
The register lay tucked inside a desk drawer in her dad’s study.
Among its contents was a yellowed notebook that struck a strange chord of familiarity. As she opened it, her eyes narrowed at the handwriting.

April 5, Today I married Donald. We shared a family meal, and my heart brimmed with happiness. My sole regret is that my dad and brother could not attend.

‘September 9, I’m expecting. Donald is overjoyed. He expressed his wish that this child be a boy and the next a girl–so that, in old age, the brother can serve as his sister’s protector.

‘October 10, I encountered despair for the first time. I am at a loss. I consulted the doctor about terminating the pregnancy, but was warned that it might compromise my chances of conceiving in the future. I never imagined Donald would betray our marriage. I felt like a fool. I had broken my dad’s and brother’s hearts for him, and yet he still betrayed me! What am I to do? Sweetheart, if I make this choice, will you ever resent me?‘
As Serena absorbed the words, a chill overtook her. Her face paled almost instantly.
So her dad had been unfaithful to her mom while she was pregnant with their second child.
Serena remembered her mom–always somber, always withdrawn–and the memory cut through her like a knife.
And after her mom’s passing, Donald remarried Yvonne a mere three months later.
His betrayal had spanned the entirety of that time.
It turned out her mom didn’t die from weak health–she was destroyed by heartbreak.
Donald’s voice floated up from downstairs. “Serena!”
“Sherry, have you seen Rena?”
“Mr. Steele, Ms. Steele appears to be upstairs.”
A surge of rage coursed through Serena’s veins, her pulse roaring. She snapped the drawer closed, slipping the register and diary into her bag.
Gripping it tightly, she fought to calm her storming anger.
