“My uncle just updated his status! You won’t believe it–he didn’t simply post the marriage certificate; he even joked about whether there are any single folks left.”
Serena listened, her attention caught, as Sebastian’s enviable post appeared on her feed.
“Rena, are you even paying attention? This is unreal. Did my uncle get possessed or something?
“And this post came less than a month after he publicly announced his girlfriend. Looks like my uncle went and got married in a flash!”
Serena stayed quiet for a long moment, and Lucinda immediately sensed something off. “Rena, why are you silent?”
Serena forced a response. “I… Lucy, I have to tell you something. It’s just… I…” she swallowed, her mouth parched, “the one who actually married your uncle… that was me.”
The phone slipped from Lucinda’s hand with a heavy clatter. Amid the faint crash, Serena heard a sharp, incredulous gasp.
The voice on the line sounded muffled, distorted, almost underwater–gurgling and bubbling unintelligibly.
Feeling guilty, Serena hung up, anxious Sebastian might show up. As expected, when she stepped out, there he was, leaning against the restroom door.
“Are you alright?” he asked gently.
Serena shook her head. “I’m fine. Let’s go.”
Once in the car, her fingers trembled as she clipped her seatbelt.
“Sebastian…” Serena hesitated, conflicted, “why did you put up that status?”
Sebastian arched an eyebrow. “You saw it?”
“Yes,” she murmured.
“It was my first time getting married–and my last. I just felt like sharing.”
“Do you post statuses often?”
His eyes were unwavering, fixed on hers, steady and penetrating.
Serena’s cheeks flamed. She shook her head quickly. “I don’t usually post stuff like that.”
“Alright then,” he said softly, a shadow of disappointment in his tone.
He silenced his phone, parted his lips, and instructed, “Let’s go. We’re heading home.”

The Levine Residence erupted in chaos.
Nathan blurted out, “Dad, did you catch Sebastian’s status?”
“Bryce, he barely mentioned having a girlfriend, and now he’s married?” Deanna’s brows furrowed. “Bryce, did Sebastian get trapped into a wedding?”
Bryce’s emotions were a tangled mess of anger and excitement.
Anger that such a major life event–marriage–wasn’t disclosed to the family beforehand, leaving them all to learn about it like everyone else.
Excitement that his wayward son had finally tied the knot. Bryce nearly teared up.
“Lucy, why are you zoning out? Your uncle spoils you the most. Did you even know he got married? Have you met his wife?” Deanna pressed.
Lucinda shook her head vigorously, like a rattle. “I had no idea.”
Deanna narrowed her eyes suspiciously. “You really didn’t know?”
“Deanna, I swear, I didn’t!”
The more flustered Lucinda became, the louder she spoke.
She didn’t know how to respond, now confronting the fact that her former soon–to–be sister–in–law had suddenly become her aunt–in–law.
