Lucinda’s lips curved into a subtle, half–formed smile. “I haven’t the faintest clue. But I’m certain my aunt- in–law is stunning, has a melodious voice, and a generous heart. Otherwise, how on earth could she have Uncle Sebastian wrapped around her little finger?”
Trevor’s brow furrowed, surprised at how familiar Lucinda had become with Sebastian.
Sebastian had always maintained a polite distance from the younger crowd–cordial enough for appearances, yet never warm or approachable.
It was largely due to his naturally reserved demeanor. A single glance from those steely eyes could make anyone feel chilled to the marrow.
Amber had a penchant for comparisons. “Heh. Lucy, you seem awfully fond of Uncle Sebastian’s wife. Have you actually met her?”
For a brief moment, all eyes shifted toward Lucinda.
Deanna pressed further, “Lucy, you have met her, haven’t you? Goodness, child, why didn’t you mention it before? Who is she, anyway? Surely some heiress with a fortune, right?”
Amber leaned in quietly. “If Uncle Sebastian has chosen her, there’s no way she’s ordinary.”
Lucinda’s gaze flickered with determination. She needed to defend her closest friend.
“Deanna, I haven’t met her,” Lucinda explained, “but I doubt Uncle Sebastian is shallow. Every Denton’s upper echelon heiress dreams of marrying him, yet he barely spares them a glance. What truly matters to him is what lies within.” She cast a cool glance at Amber. “And what lies within isn’t something just anyone possesses.”
Amber’s expression shifted noticeably.
Lucinda’s look had been a pointed jab.
Yet the rest of the family seemed oblivious. Bryce pondered for a moment. “Lucy has a point. Sebastian has always pursued only the finest–he tolerates no imperfections. Naturally, the person he selects will be exceptional.”
“Exactly, Grandpa! I was thinking the same thing! You’re brilliant!” Lucinda chimed in cheerfully.
Amber pressed her lips together, a storm of insecurity brewing. The finest… Is Bryce really implying I’m not enough?
Her hand clenched Trevor’s arm unconsciously, though she barely noticed her rising frustration.
Trevor looked down at her. “What’s wrong, Amber?“.
Amber forced a strained smile. “Nothing. Just a little stomachache.”
Trevor nodded, distracted. “Oh, could be your period.”

Her cycle had just finished. Trevor had always remembered every minor detail about her, never faltering.
A sudden sting hit her nose as Trevor felt increasingly distant, even though they were already engaged.
Deanna grew weary of Bryce’s constant praise for Sebastian and shifted the conversation toward the couple.
“Trevor, when will you and Amber officially register your marriage?”
Trevor blinked, caught off guard by his mom’s abrupt question. “In a few days.”

Deanna scowled, her irritation apparent. “No more ‘in a few days. Go tomorrow. Your pre–wedding photos are ready. Why are you delaying the license?”
