“This phone’s been in my possession for a couple of years,” Lucinda’s eyes twinkled mischievously. “Uncle Sebastian, I’ll give you a deal–just sixty thousand for it!”
Serena pressed her lips together, silently wishing Lucinda would stop joking.
No one anticipated that
26ebastian would respond so cheerfully. “Alright. Check your phone–I’ve sent it.”
Lucinda had been bluffing the entire time, never expecting her uncle to actually transfer the funds. Her gaze fixed on the backup phone. The endless string of zeros made her eyes widen in disbelief.
Units, tens, hundreds, thousands, ten–thousands, hundred–thousands–six million, six hundred sixty thousand!
Attached message. “Go easy on my wife. She’s shy.”
Without hesitation, Lucinda tapped “Accept.”
Perfect–consider that a little incentive from Uncle Sebastian!
Just in time, too—she’d had her eye on some bags and didn’t plan on being modest.
She stuffed the phone into her pocket as if the money might vanish at any moment.
“Thanks, Uncle Sebastian. You’re incredible.“.
Serena’s curiosity about the exact amount was burning, but Lucinda didn’t give her the chance.
“Rena, show me your new place.”
Serena’s ears flushed. “Stop it.”
Lucinda tugged her friend along, lowering her voice. “Be honest, Rena. About marrying my uncle–was that really your choice?”
Even with the money in hand, if it proved tainted, Lucinda would return it instantly.
She and Rena were inseparable–nothing, not even Sebastian, came between them.
Serena chuckled. “Of course it was. Don’t worry about me Lucy. I can handle myself.”
Lucinda considered her friend and nodded. Rena is far from fragile.
“Heh, don’t stress. My uncle has no past entanglements, no scandals, and even his assistant’s male. I’ve never seen him get close to anyone. But honestly, I always wondered if he might be… you know, the other way. Why don’t you check if he’s straight?”
Serena froze. “He should be straight, right?”

“Should‘ doesn’t cut it. Verify it properly!” Lucinda insisted.
Serena hesitated. “And how exactly do I verify?”
Lucinda groaned. “Simple. Test it out on your bed. You’ll figure it out.”
The words made Serena’s checks ignite. Within seconds, her face turned crimson.
“Lucy! Lower your voice!”
She was terrified someone in the hallway might overhear, which would be mortifying.

Lucinda grinned sheepishly. “Relax, he didn’t catch that. I’m just looking out for your happiness, Rena.”
They huddled together, whispering over all sorts of private matters. By the time they emerged, the movers had left.
Seeing Charles, the steward, still outside, Lucinda’s eyes sparkled. “Charles, where’s my uncle?”
Charles smiled. “Mr. Levine decided to cook for himself today.
“He should be finishing up soon. Mrs. Levine, Ms. Levine, you can head down to eat.”
Lucinda inhaled sharply. “Rena, did I hear that correctly? Uncle Sebastian’s cooking? Is he doing this for me?”
Charles hadn’t moved far and nearly tripped.
He glanced back at Lucinda, a mixture of amusement and pity on his face. He had no idea she could be this delusional.
Serena smiled faintly. “Maybe knowing you were here made him excited, that’s why he’s cooking.”
With her best friend’s reassurance, Lucinda felt even more thrilled.
Wow, I never expected the usually icy Uncle Sebastian to actually be considerate.
But when they went downstairs and she saw the heart–shaped steak on Serena’s plate, Lucinda realized
she’d overanalyzed everything.
She hacked at her own steak, then shot Sebastian a glare full of mock indignation.
Sebastian, calm and unruffled, cut his steak leisurely. His portion was heart–shaped as well.
“Is it easy to cut? I haven’t even touched mine. Do you want to swap?”
