Amber froze completely at the sound of it. A chill crawled up from the soles of her feet, spreading all the way through her chest and sinking deep into her bones.

Is he regretting marrying me?

Amber bit her lip, trying hard not to let the driver see her tears. Take Trevor back to Levine Residence. I’ll grab a cab to my apartment myself, she said quietly.

Ms. Jacobs, you’re not going back?the driver asked hesitantly.

She forced a small, bitter smile. NoI’m not going back.”

The driver thought, Makes sense. She’s technically the Levinesadopted daughter, but now she’s married to the LevinesheirTrevor, really. So with all that, she still has to go through the whole wedding pickup thing, which is why she’s staying somewhere else tonight.

Ms. Jacobs, have a safe ride, the driver said.

Once he finished speaking, Amber watched the car roll away. The smile on her face faded completely.

She did not dare to listen to anything Trevor said after that. If there was something even more painful waiting for her, she was not sure she would make it to tomorrow’s wedding.

The next morning, Trevor overslept. Deanna had to shake him awake. Trevor, there’s only half an hour left before the auspicious time. How much did you even drink last night?

Nathan assumed Trevor had gone overboard because he was getting married. His expression stayed calm as he reminded him, Missing the timing isn’t the end of the world, but you cannot afford any mistakes at the banquet later. And once you’re married, it’s time to settle down.

Trevor managed to get himself ready quickly enough and rushed out. Several groomsmen were already waiting at the entrance of his house, visibly impatient.

The Levines were taking a bride, after all. A convoy of more than ten Cullinans rolled out to fetch her. It was an impressive sight.

Kyana and another bridesmaid stayed with Amber in the apartment, waiting. Kyana muttered under her breath, Why are they still not here? Don’t tell me there’s traffic today of all days.

The other bridesmaid glanced at the woman sitting in front of the vanity mirror, her expression cool and distant. She raised a finger to her lips. Enough. It’s Amber’s wedding day. Let’s watch what we say. Late or not, they’ll show up eventually.”

He shows up in the end. He is not going to skip coming to get his bride.

At ten thirty in the morning, Trevor’s wedding motorcade finally rolled in, late and unhurried.

The woman in the white gown stood there, her gaze calm and unreadable. On the surface, she looked composed, almost detached. Quietly, where no one could see it, she let out a breath she had been holding, a small flicker of relief settling in her chest.

As long as he shows up, that’s enough.

Amber did not know when it happened, only herself down to this.

hat somewhere along the way she had shrunk

Mr. Trevor, cash gift first. No cash gift, no door opening.

Alright, we’re paying, all of it,the groomsmen called out, half laughing, half impatient. Open the door already. We’re running late. We still have to get to the hotel.”

The whole bridal pickup felt rushed and hollow. One step bled into the next. Nothing lingered, nothing felt sincere. They breezed through the traditions just to say they had done them.

Inside the lead car, Trevor pressed his lips together before speaking. I’m sorry, Amber. I got carried away last night and drank too much. I justwhen I thought about marrying you, I couldn’t really control myself.

Is that so?Amber smiled softly. The curve of her lips never reached her eyes. As always, she chose understanding over honesty. It’s okay, Trevor. As long as I know I matter to you, that’s enough for me.

Trevor’s gaze flickered.

I cannot even tell what I am thinking anymore. Before, I could not stand the idea of Amber being wronged. I want to place the best of everything into her hands, as the whole world belongs to her. Back then, I did it as her brother. Now that our roles have shifted, Amber seems perfectly at ease. But something in me feels off. I cannot name it, only that the unease sits there quietly and refuses to go away.

He pulled his gaze back toward the window, avoiding those eyes that burned with so much longing. He couldn’t bring himself to meet them. Of course I’ve got you in my heart, Amber. You’ve always been there, right here, in my heart as your brother.” O

Amber dug her fingers into her palm until it was red. She had never wanted just the simple
