Serena almost spat the water out. A sharp little cough shook her shoulders.

He reached over and brushed her back with his palm, like he had all the time in the world. “Slow down. I meant, did it feel good to shove this in their faces?”

She gave him a look. Every time. He never finished the punchline in one breath.

He dropped his gaze and smiled, perfectly calm.

Nathan and his wife took their son and daughter–in–law off to make rounds. Bryce didn’t want to be front and center anymore, so he slipped away to the lounge.

That left Sebastian and his little group at the table.

Julian walked over with a few others, drinks in hand. “Sebastian, Serena. Hey.”

Elijah hadn’t expected Sebastian to go this far. He clearly hadn’t thought the man would commit like this. He raised his glass. “Serena. A toast to you.”

Serena knew Elijah didn’t like her. He probably thought she didn’t belong next to Sebastian. Their lives were different, sure, but she wasn’t the type to tear herself down because of it.

Besides, he was dating Winona, so Serena gave him the courtesy. She reached for her juice, but before she could lift it, Sebastian stopped her with one hand.

His voice dropped, teasing. “She’s my wife. If you’re toasting, you drink it yourself.”

Elijah said nothing.

So petty. And after he warned him last time, too.

Elijah tipped his head back and knocked the drink down in one go.

Connor came up behind him. He wasn’t as clueless. “Serena, I’ll down mine. You do you.”

Sebastian looked satisfied. His stare moved to Julian. “Your turn, Dr. Hill.”

Julian grinned like he was on stage. “Serena, here’s to you and Sebastian. Wishing you both a long, happy life.”

Elijah and Connor exchanged a look. Julian had no shame.

Lucinda narrowed her eyes at Julian’s dramatic toast.

Julian turned and caught her look, but he didn’t flinch.

As the group stepped away, others who had seen them toast came over too. People lined up, all hoping to get on Sebastian’s good side.

The wedding reception looked like a comedy show.
