“Rena, I heard you and Mr. Levine tied the knot. Congratulations.”

Serena smiled as she typed back, ‘Thanks. Same to you. If anything big happens on your end, promise you’ll let me know.‘
Her situation with Sebastian was way too messy to explain. Even Lucinda didn’t get the full story.
She had her reasons. She’d gained something from it. Running around telling people it was a transactional marriage didn’t sit right.
What she didn’t know was that her reply had just cut into Winona like a blade.
‘Rena, Elijah and I broke up.’
Broke up?
Serena blinked at the screen. That came out of nowhere. Elijah had looked totally fine at the wedding. Relaxed even. No signs at all that he’d just ended a relationship
She tapped to call, but Winona declined it.
‘Rena, I can’t talk right now. We’ll catch up later. I kno
Be careful. Don’t go falling too deep.
Mr. Le’s not like Elijah, but I need to say this.
‘If you give too much, the person who ends up hurt is always you!
Serena didn’t know the full story. But it didn’t matter. She was with Winona either way.
Tunderstand. You don’t need to worry. Let’s meet up when you’ve got a breather.‘
Once their chat ended, Serena opened her social feed. The top trending post spelled out everything. Now she knew why they were done.
She’d never liked Elijah. They ran in totally different circles. No overlap. No reason to talk.
And now? It all made sense. The guy was a player.
If he had a match lined up already, why drag Winona into it?
At the wedding, she thought they looked stable. Turned out that was just a cover.
And her? She’d never let herself fall for someone like that again.
Sebastian had no clue that all his effort was being twisted into someone else’s cautionary tale.
The next morning at Beaumont Legal.

Serena had barely gotten through the door when Eugene motioned her over. “Let’s go. Bring your laptop. We’re heading to Levine Group.”
She looked up. “Got it, boss.”
They walked briskly toward the garage.
“There’s a snag in the merger paperwork. One of the finance leads flagged it. We’ve been asked to review it in person.”
“Okay.”
He glanced at her and noticed how stiff she looked. “Relax. The accounting team just wants a few parts reworded. Nothing major.”
It was her first time working on a merger this big. Some nerves were expected.
“Yeah, I’m a bit tense. But I’ll be fine once we get through this.”
“By the way, did you hear? Mr. Levine brought his fiancee to the wedding yesterday.”
“Not fiancée. Wife. They’re already legally married. Just haven’t thrown the party yet.”
“That news blew through their circle. I bet a dozen socialites cried themselves to sleep.”
“Really?” Serena’s smile didn’t reach her eyes.
Hearing gossip about yourself never felt normal.
Eugene changed the subject. “So, Serena, you thinking of dating again?”
“If not, I’ve got a few solid options. There’s a prosecutor I met during a trial. He’s 29. Smart, single, and good–looking.”
“Boss, please. Spare me. Don’t start matchmaking.”
She was married. Not that she
could say that.
Which made every excuse sound weak.
Eugene caught the pushback and didn’t push further. Once/people hit their forties, matchmaking became a default hobby.
Gender didn’t matter.
They parked and walked into the usual conference room. The accountants were already there.
