The deep velvet blue of the dress made her skin glow even brighter. She hadn’t worn any makeup besides a little lipstick, but that was all she needed to stop a room in its tracks.

Too bad the timing was off. Her stomach tensed. Her period felt like it was about to start. She told Sebastian to go in first and headed to the restroom.

She had just sat down to check her clothes when she heard a soft click from the stall door.

Her brows pulled together. Something felt wrong.

She turned the lock, but it wouldn’t budge.

Who’s out there? Her voice snapped through the silence.

No answer. Just the soft scuff of footsteps fading away.

She reached for her phone. It wasn’t there. Her purse was with Sebastian. Her phone was inside it.

She looked up and gauged the stall height. Maybe she could climb over using the toilet seat.

Before she could even stand, a blast of cold water dumped down on her from above.

The shock hit instantly. Her skin burned against the chill. Water drenched her completely.

Then came the rapid shuffle of someone running away.

Her hair clung to her neck. Her dress stuck to her skin. Every inch of her was soaked. Whoever did it was already gone.

Not far away, Elijah spotted Sebastian walking in. Sebastian, finally. You made it.

You’re late. That means a round.

Sebastian lifted the sleek clutch in his hand and shook his head. /Can’t drink tonight.

Elijah frowned. Come on. You said no girlfriends.

Sebastian raised a slow smirk. You said no girlfriends. You didn’t say anything about wives.

Elijah cursed under his breath. Still, Serena was already here. He couldn’t tell her to leave now.

Where is she?

Sebastian glanced at his watch. Over ten minutes had passed. She should’ve been back by now. He tossed the clutch on the table and walked out. I’ll go check.

In the restroom, Serena’s voice had turned rough. Anyone out there? Open the door!

Music from the lounge pounded through the walls, drowning her out.

She slammed her heel against the door, again and again.

A dull pounding echoed from inside the women’s restroom.

Sebastian reached for the handle. Babe, are you in there?

Her breath caught.

That word felt like oxygen.

Honey! I’m right here!

She didn’t even notice what she had just called him.

Sebastian’s eyes narrowed. He sped toward the sound. Which one?

Second stall!

He saw the mop wedged across the door. He kicked it loose and leaned in close. Try it now. It should open.

The latch clicked, and the door creaked back. The second she saw his face, she collapsed into his arms.

What took you so long? I’ve been yelling like crazy. No one answered. Her voice trembled with frustration, but it sounded like a plea for comfort.

Sebastian’s jaw tensed.

I’m sorry. I didn’t know.
