Serena was left speechless.

Since their wedding, she had noticed Sebastian’s demeanor had grown bolder and more unrestrained.

Serena shot Donald a glance, the corner of her mouth twitching in restrained amusement.

But Donald had no idea that Serena had instructed Sebastian to play along.

Sebastian inclined his head. “Donald, I brought a small gift for you.”

If they were staging this performance, they might as well go all in; he wasn’t coming empty- handed.

Donald barely noticed the gesture. Even if Sebastian had arrived without a gift, he would have been thrilled.

“Come in quickly! Have a seat! No need to change your shoes,” Donald said with a teasing smirk, eyes glinting with mockery. “Don’t bother bringing a gift next time.”

Sebastian let the pleasantries wash over him.

He had barely settled at the dining table when Donald rubbed his hands together and brought over the wine.

“Sebastian, the wedding day was so hectic, I didn’t get a chance to speak with you properly,” Donald said, raising his glass. “My daughter is in your care now. She can be a little headstrong, so please be gentle with her.”

He tipped his head back and drained the glass in one smooth motion.

Sebastian didn’t drink. He replied calmly, “Donald, that’s not accurate. Rena is remarkable in every way. She’s not headstrong at all–I just find her absolutely charming.”

Serena blinked.

Donald paused.

Charming? Is he referring to the girl who shows up at midnight with a bucket of water to douse Yvonne and me? Or the one who refuses to let me step on stage at the wedding? What part of that is charming?

Donald’s lips twitched. “Oh, if you see it that way, that’s all that matters,” he said, pouring another glass and downing it in one go.

“Oh, Sebastian, when Rena’s mom was alive, I failed her. Work consumed me back then, and I didn’t have time to be there or care for her. Otherwise, seeing Rena marry, Lindsay would have been the happiest person alive.”
