“Ms. Vale, Lucinda and I have just gotten together. I will care for her sincerely and hold her dear. I genuinely like her, even if she hasn’t noticed it yet. This isn’t how a brother usually cares for a sister; it comes straight from my heart.”
Julian delivered his pitch with a perfectly straight face.
Lucinda shot him an odd look. Since when has he ever liked me? This man will do anything just to find a wife.
At the same time, another thought crept in.
Has Julian’s value seriously fallen this low? Does he really have to pull stunts like this to land a wife?
Now that I think about it, I honestly can’t recall him ever dating anyone.
Still, he’s not that young anymore. There’s no way last night was his first time, right?
Lucinda had been far too drunk to recall any details.
Sophia smiled gently. “Julian, I understand your point. How about this? You came quite unexpectedly. Please let me talk to my daughter first, okay?”
Julian nodded politely. “Of course, Ms. Vale. I’m not in a rush. I’ll wait for your answer.”
The warmth left Sophia’s eyes, replaced by a sharp gaze directed at Lucinda. “Come with me.”
Sebastian’s mouth twitched as he gave his friend a look of disdain. “Julian, since when did you become this shameless?”
Julian stayed seated on the couch with Bryce and Serena present. He did not flinch as he mocked, “Didn’t I pick it up from you?”
Sebastian had no comeback.
Julian pressed on calmly, “Otherwise, how did you manage to win Serena over?”
Bryce remained silent, though his mind moved quickly. Heh. You really do become who you hang around. No surprise there.
“Heh. Sit tight for a moment, Julian. I’ll head upstairs to see how they are.” Serena paid no mind to their sparring, her focus already fixed on her best friend upstairs.

Lucinda parted her lips slightly. “What are you trying to say?”
Sophia sighed gently. “Lucinda, you don’t like Julian. If you genuinely dislike him, don’t give him false hope.”
Lucinda lifted her chin stubbornly. “How do you know I don’t like him?”
Sophia looked into her daughter’s eyes, speaking softly and confidently. “Have you truly let him go?”
“Enough!”
“Mom, you’re the last person who should be raising him!” Lucinda clenched her lips tightly. Her chest heaved, overwhelmed by a sudden surge of sorrow. “You knew I liked Blake, and you still married his father. Mom, what kind of mother does that?”
Sophia’s expression did not betray guilt. “Lucinda, Blake is not right for you. He is not the person you think he is. The two of you are unsuitable.”
Lucinda retorted, “Why are we considered unsuitable? You know how much I like him. You knew everything, so why didn’t you choose someone else for me to marry? If you’re so fond of marriage, changing husbands should be easy for you, right?”
A sharp crack split the air.
The slap landed.
Pain surged through Sophia’s chest a second later.
“Lucinda, I’ve already told you that you’re not a good match for each other. Would I lie to you? If you really liked him, or if he even had a small amount of feeling for you, then after I divorced his father, why didn’t you two end up together?”
Lucinda brushed away her tears. “Yeah. He doesn’t like me. Are you happy now?”
