Ava kept agreeing over and over. “I’m sorry, Ms. Steele. I’m really too poor. I was scared they’d kick us out of the hospital. I was scared that if we lost the lawsuit, we wouldn’t get a single dollar. I have to treat Shawn!”
“Ms. Warren, I understand. Don’t think about anything else right now. His treatment is what matters,” Serena said.
After signing the mediation agreement, Serena had no choice. She could only do her best to comfort her.
After she hung up, she felt awful. It wasn’t because the case was withdrawn. It was because they had been so close to winning. Even if they were going to settle, if she had been there in person, she felt she could have helped Ava push for a better number.
But two hundred thousand dollars was really too little.
It was nowhere near enough.
She could only hope for a miracle and pray that Shawn would wake up.
Serena didn’t go back to the law firm. She went straight home.
When Sebastian came back, he didn’t see her in the dining room. “Where’s Serene?”
Charles came to report. “Sir, Mrs. Levine seemed to be in a bad mood today. She went upstairs as soon as she got home.”
In a bad mood?
A few days earlier, she had mentioned that the case was going smoothly.
Did something change?
Sebastian went upstairs. No one was in the study, so she was probably in the bedroom.
He pushed the bedroom door open. The curtains were tightly closed, and the lights were off. He walked carefully to the bed.
“Honey?”
He could barely see her frowning in her sleep.
Sebastian reached out his hand. He wanted to smooth the crease between her brows. Then he noticed tears at the corner of her eyes.
What kind of dream is she having?
Why is she crying?
Serena had a long dream. In the dream, someone kept chasing her. She kept running. The red finish line

was right in front of her, but no matter how hard she ran, she couldn’t reach it.
When she woke up, it was 3 a.m.
The moment she sat up, Sebastian woke up too.
“What’s wrong? Did you have a nightmare?”
Serena shook her head in a daze. “No. It was just a dream.”
It wasn’t exactly a nightmare, but it wasn’t a good dream either.
“It wasn’t a nightmare? But you were crying last night.”
Serena raised her hand and wiped the corner of her eye. “It’s fine. I was crying in the dream.”

Sebastian held her and kissed the corner of her eye. “Be good. Go back to sleep. It’s still early. If you’ve got any trouble, I’ll back you up tomorrow, okay?”
Serena laughed.
“Sebastian, when you talk like that, it makes me sound useless.”
Sebastian raised an eyebrow. “Then who are you saving your husband for if you don’t use him?”
When he put it that way, it actually made sense.
Serena smiled and snuggled into his arms. The restlessness in her heart slowly faded. “Okay. Let’s sleep. Good night, Sebastian.”
After a full night of rest, Serena felt a little better.
At breakfast, Sebastian carefully asked what had happened the day before.
